The 2018 Music Thread.
Here's to discuss your favorite releases from 2018.
I'm not going to go into depth, but so far top picks for me are: Haru Nemuri- Haru to Shura (Review) Manatsu Nagahara- Great Hungry (Review) Phew- Voice Hardcore (Review) A Perfect Circle- Eat the Elephant Sleep- The Sciences US Girls- A Poem Unlimited Yamantaka//Sonic Titan- DIRT Anna von Hausswolff- Dead Magic I'll share some of the top tracks from these later on. But just starting the thread. What are some of your top picks so far? |
One of my good friends got to play acoustic guitar on this track with the late Chris Cornell. Lyrics by Johnny Cash, melody by Cornell. |
I got these hot pickups.
From left to right top to bottom: 1. This is a calendar that came for free with the DVD, has some pics of various artists on the label and some ads for other products 2. The Shiina Ringo flag from her current tour. Not sure if I like the design or not. Better than the tshirts they have for sale at least. 3. Maron Hamada 5th Anniversary 7"- NOT the same as the RSD release, this was only available at her 5th anniversary show and limited to 100 copies total. Signed. 4. Wakusei Abnormal 7"- while the band have become somewhat stale over the years, this is a great single and I had to pickup the vinyl. Sold out real fast so I'm lucky to get it. 5. Bokutachi no iru tokoro. Live DVD- this was mail order only within Japan, so lucky I had a hookup who could get this (and the rest of the stuff here) for me. Good times  |
THIS IS WHAT I MISSED SO MUCH ;o;
because the forums were down by the end of 2017 I had to go through multiple music blogs "best of 2017" listings to see all the interesting music that was released in 2017 but I had to filter their opinion because they were written by people I don't know here was always the place to receive good musical indications! |

MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS have been touring again for the last couple of years after their initial breakup. They've only offered a single so far though, but now, finally, the news that fans have been waiting for was dropped. On July 4, they will release a full new album on Flake Records entitled 'No New World'!
Bokutachi no iru tokoro. also have an album in the works, and sounds like it will be the first album of fully new material since 2016's 'Gomi'. There isn't much details about the new album so far, but we do know that vocalist Dame Ko has done a bondage themed photoshoot for the album cover. |

^Sounds like Madonna's Frozen done by Alanis
I LIKE IT! |
Another MV from the best Japanese album of the year (so far) God that guitar tone is just amazing. |
Just came across this video and have been engrossed ever since!
Can someone help to translate the contents of this interview?
It seems like the internets seemed to have picked up on his song and did their own accompaniments.
He composed(?) it when he was freaking 13 years old!
I really hope this kid gets a bright future as a musician. Seems to have a knack for feels-inducing music

Plug me into Marshall I'll blow out your eardrums Behold, the new cover for Bokutachi no iru tokoro.'s latest mini album 'Otona Gokko', available on August 1. |
Blow out your window!
:uki:FAKE FAN TBH! |
It was intentional cause it's Bokutachi
|
Im convinced this album will be the most crushing, depressing and yet relatable release of 2018. Damn my heart. |
That Mitski track is BANGIN. Lovefool for the 2010's.
|
ZOMBIE-CHANG's newest album "PETIT PETIT PETIT" comes out on Friday. This is the new MV and it's gonna be the best MV in 2018. |
Great song ^
Can't wait to listen to the album but I didn't buy it; low on money u_u; |
|
I think I really like the new Deafheaven. It sounds more like Iceage though.

Disappointed in Be the Cowboy. I cant help but feel that the good feels to the album are more for Puberty 2 and Bury Me at Make Out Creek. Cowboy fails to build on her last two records. The songs feel duller. After a few listens, only "Nobody", "Me and My Husband" and "Two Slow Dancers" really stick. From a larger view, Be the Cowboy isn't a bad album. But I think anyone that's watched her progression over the years had higher hopes.
|
Nah im going with the Fork on this one; it's her best work yet
|
2018's hottest Japanese act just dropped the single of the year
That's Japanese AOTY and Japanese Single of the Year under her belt now. I don't think that's gonna change either, looking at the release calendar.

When the doody did this little Christmas miracle happen and how did I miss it? |
Haru and her band are so pretty! :P They're like an edgier SCANDAL!
|
This album's probably gonna be good, skipping the leak until I have it in my hand though |
Really diggin' the new Wakusei Abnormal
I make no hyperbolic comment when I say it's the closest thing you're gonna get to a new Shiina Ringo album in 2018. |
I liked Saintseneca's album a few years ago (Dark Arc.) Thought it was kinda underrated. This song is a crazy leap (at least during my first listen.)

New Jun Togawa/Kei Ohkubo album November 21!

I tell you what
For a band I've always thought were Meme Weeb Lily Allen, The new Kero Kero Bonito is worth a damn |
Honestly, the new Kyary Pamyu Pamyu may surprise you. It certainly did catch me off guard, knowing how much she and Nakata have fallen from grace in recent times.
My review is here if you wanna check it out: https://deadgrandmablog.wordpress.co...pamyu-japamyu/ |
So phai dropped a new single with MINAKEKKE (who, if you haven't checked out yet, is an amazing newcomer) yesterday. This track is basically Japan's answer to Florence and the Machine. You can take that to the bank. |

ETA: Listening to it again. This might be my new favorite thing. |
about half an hour ago Jason Becker uploaded Valley of Fire. Twice actually.
Lots of things are happening in my mind right now... Unbelievably cool.
His new album is released December 7th... I'd appreciate if anyone checks this out when it does :) This is a stand out release for the year before it's even released. |

Japan Times article about surely this year's biggest indie success in Japan, Haru Nemuri |
It's so sad when good music doesn't have the attention it deserves
one of the best songs I listened to in 2018 is this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqA-FnFkx3Q And I want to say they will be successful for sure, and they will keep on making good music... but honestly in such a competitive market as the Korean is, and judging by the number of views of this and the other videos this band has, it will be hard for them to make it =____= they also have more good stuff in their soundcloud btw https://soundcloud.com/fcmhoudini/tracks |
Picked up the new Cat Power album, it's pretty good.
|
|
Rina Sawayama's 'Cherry' is a nice, solid pop song. What else have I been listening to? Kadhja Bonet's album. The Prince 1983 piano album. Not much else that's new, just the usual Stevie, Marvin, Donny, Prince, Van Hunt, The Roots, and still Ringo.
|
Admittedly I haven't listened to many new albums in 2018, but this is one my favorites so far. Looking forward to reading the year-end lists that will be posted here! |
I have started, I am writing the list up on my blog so here's the first entry, numbers 25-21

(Btw the album by cacophony is probably the closest you're gonna get to a Korean KZK, instrumentally)
|
Quote:
The cacophony album is like KZK without the symmetry. I could really see the similarity in the first half, but in the second half of the album I started missing the sense of structure that KZK had. It's still a really good album though. |

Haru Nemuri steals Oomori Seiko's lunch thread.
Okay, I'm nu-Jihad now. Old habits, I should be productive. I didn't listen to any one album very much this year, and I'm lucky if I even listened through some of my most anticipated albums all the way through. Hop Along's album was really good. Sadness aside, Mitski's "Nobody" is without a doubt the song of the year. Like I said before, its "Lovefool" for the 2010's. I mean that in a descriptive way, and not to be reductive like above. I also really jammed to Kero Kero Bonito's "Only Acting" but I can't remember if that was this year or not. I'll try to be better next year. @DG yeah, that Beths album! Google wanted me to listen to that album, I loved it, then I saw you post about it, and it was everywhere. Glad to see it's getting some cred too. |
I do fear one thing with Haru Nemuri's album going forward: that it's a lightning in a bottle scenario. I guess we will see but to strike that level of perfection takes more than skill alone.
