I've tried to reconcile the whole Oomori phenomenon in my head, but I just can't. By and large I can't stand her, from her songwriting to her guitar technique to especially her singing voice. I've bought most of her major albums, each time hoping that it will be the one where it all clicks and suddenly I get it, but each time I just get more confused as to why she's so popular. Maybe I'm just too old.

On the other hand I am also forced to acknowledge that she is one of the more important Japanese artists out there today, and she is influencing a generation of new acts, just as Ringo did. She *has* done a few songs that I've actually liked (e.g. Handmade Home). And whatever it is that she's doing, she's working at a fevered pace, while still consistently exceeding fans' expectations.

So I guess on balance my attitude toward Oomori is...grudging respect?
