RIP Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse)
Huge, huge loss.
He seemed to have a tremendously good heart in addition to his unique musical spirit, but life wasn't easy for him, and I guess he finally wasn't able to outrun the demons. I imagine Vic Chestnut's recent death was a heavy blow. So sad. Doubly so personally, since he had recently moved to my town and was opening a studio. Maybe the most self-destructive mutilation of a potential huge hit in the history of recorded music:
Chaos of the Galaxy/Happy Man (mp3) I have no idea whether it was a courageous statement of artistic integrity, or deep self-loathing, or some combination of both, but either way, it's just perfect. From NME: "He is one of music's greatest ever poets of severe, clinical depression - the vicious kind, the kind that leaves sufferers unable to think, or move, or speak." So much of his music inhabited the bleakest, darkest corners of what it means to be alive, so painful that large portions are really hard to listen to. Just deep, black, poisonous misery. But tremendously, tremendously beautiful. |
