Recent Times Interview
...Q. Do you think a show like yours — big budget, serialized, very intense, lots of characters — can still work on network television? CUSE One of the nostalgic elements of experiencing the end of “Lost” is that I also think it’s the end of an era. The media landscape has changed dramatically even in the six years of this show. Here we are, we’re shooting a show, there are somewhere between 425 people who work on the show, 325 in Hawaii and 100 here in Los Angeles, we shot the show on Panavision, 35-millimeter film, we had two full crews — the scale and the scope and the size of this, this is the most expensive television series made anywhere in the world. And in this media landscape, it’s incredibly hard to capitalize something the way “Lost” has been capitalized. We have a fractured media environment, and there are many more choices, but as a result there are smaller resources for every show that gets made, and so we feel a little bit like we’re blacksmiths in the Internet era. It’s kind of sad because we are big fans of action-adventure and genre and things like that. And when you see the “Lost” finale, it’s like a movie, and just as fans of television, it’s sad to realize that there just won’t be that many rolls of the dice of this size and scope. |

Fantastic episode last night! Really brought everything together for the finale and gave weight to the story told last episode. I think the Jacob campfire scene is what people expected them to be talking like last episode -- a straight to the point, nice flowing conversation with answers. No vague cryptic metaphors or half truths.
There was so much stuffed into the episode too, yet it didn't feel rushed. Two awesome lines in the Widmore scene, "You said she couldn't speak, so she was pointless" and "You don't get the chance to save your daughter". Some people see this as Ben reversing back to his evil ways, but really his hatred for Widmore overcomes everything given that he blames him for the death of his daughter. And whilst it may appear that he is helping Smokey now, I think he's going to double cross him (and probably get killed in the process; dying for a good cause). The sideways are culminating in... something. It seems all of the losties are going to be gathered at a gig (Jack's sons, we can assume). But why? If they're going with the happy ending route, I think Desmond will be used as the failsafe and their consciousness will rush over to the ALT timeline and they'll all remember everything at this concert and celebrate being alive, being free and defeating smokey. Though if that is the case it'll be handled a lot better than how cheesy I've just made it sound. But I don't know, there are multiple ways the two timelines could tie up. golem where are you? You're usually the first to comment! You didn't even say anything after the epic and crushing Candidate episode

I'm not a religious guy, but I thought the ending was absolutely beautiful. The perfect way to bring closure to the characters, having already concluded their island adventures (aside from Hurley and Ben, who will continue to have fun for years on the island in my imagination before dying and finding themselves in the sideways timeline). It just wonderfully emphasised how connected the characters are that they need to be together to remember and move on into the afterlife (if that's your interpretation). It's a perfect note to end the show on, since it's always been about these characters. It's just an added bit of closure which magnifies the importance of their relationships. It's a bit frustrating seeing so many people completely misinterpreting the end and assuming that it implies that they've all been dead since the pilot episode.

The Finale was bad, not for the reasons you think that I think it's bad, and I won't discuss because it, because it's not worth discussing.

I've typed and re-typed what I wanted to say like five times, but I keep wussing out because I don't feel like debating. : \ The ending didn't delivery and invalidated much of the series. That's pretty much all I got right now.

Well we don't have to discuss it, but I am interested in your opinions. If it didn't deliver for you, then I can't tell you that it did, I'm just glad that it did for me. I got the satisfying conclusion to the characters stories that I wanted and as for the answers, well I'd started coming to terms that we weren't going to get conclusive answers to a lot of the remaining questions as this season progressed, so going into the finale with those expectations (I only really wanted to know what the flash sideways were and what happened to the characters) probably allowed me to enjoy it more than anyone expecting any major revelations. Sucks that you guys feel that way though. Most fans I've talked to adored it, though the final 20 minutes have been a bit polarising.

I absolutely LOVED it. At first I was like WTF, but after a long talk with my friends, and after watching the whole thing again, I felt much much better. I couldn't imagine another way to close the cycle, so I'm really happy that it ended that way.

The final 20 minutes shouldn't really define the show or even the finale (nor effect anything that came before it). It could have just as easily ended more traditionally with just Jack's eye closing if the flash-sideways didn't happen, but we got that added comfort and closure and I'm glad for it, it would have been terribly depressing otherwise.
