I didn't think this would find its way here... But you, super-pariscombo found it. Thank you.

& Even though I think Anna is over-acting in the trailer already, I'll buy the movie. I mean, why not? xD

Not the ones I'm reading:

http://www.midnighteye.com/reviews/sakuran.shtml

Mark Schilling and Tom Mes are two of the most authoritative reviewers of contemporary Japanese film.

Tsuchiya Anna is too much generally, all the time, everywhere, because she's on all the magazine covers simultaneously and aaaah she's not even pretty. :-) Only movie I've seen with her that I can remember is Shimotsuma Monogatari. Her naughty style kind of fit in there however.

really? well the review i read on the japan times rated the movie as one of the best of the year. I guess this will help lower my expections and make the movie that much better

I'm gonna get this, especially since all the websites specify that it will have english subtitles

But I really hope they show it this summer at our local Asian/Genre film festival! It'd be awesome to hear the music in a very large movie theater!!

You mean the Fantasia Festival? My favorite festival! I'm hoping to get up there this Summer for at least a few days to catch some of the fest...especially if they show Sakuran.

It's my favorite festival as well!! It's really close to my workplace and I have a flexible schedule, so I can go see pretty much anything I want, and I usually go see 12-15 movies per year. I think Sakuran would be a good candidate for Fantasia, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed... but since they only announce the official programmation at the end of June, it will be a bit of a wait!

I was surprised to see Sakuran playing at the Seattle International Film Festival! I left work an hour early to go watch it. I like the movie; it ended a bit abruptly, but it definately was better than Memoirs 10-fold.

The music did not fit in with some parts of the movie, but maybe I have to free my mind more. I watched Marie Antoinette the other day, and also felt the same way about some of the songs. So, it could just be my bad judgement.

I don't know how well the English translation matches what is actually being said, but as an English-only speaker, based on the translation alone, the script was pretty good. Filmography was superb. Every scene was shot very beautifully.
