American Beauty has been parodied a lot as well, mainly in "Not Another Teen Movie", altough that fantasy scene with the rose petals has been seen countless times in films/tv shows/etc.

Yep, it's always the rose petal scene that gets parodied.

I know Family Guy has parodied it, at least twice.

Just finished American Beauty. Don't know why it got so much buzz all those years ago, the drama in the movie borders on silly. Kevin Spacey is terrific, however; the man carries the movie.

He is terrific but I think it's unfair to say he carried the movie because it is so brilliantly acted pretty much all around and the script is so strong. It is a stylised satire and thus intentionally OTT at times. Watch it in the right frame of mind and not as a total serious drama as it is not fully intended.

Yea, it is wonderfully acted all around, but Spacey carries it because he's steals every scene, surprisingly charismatic despite his character's morally ambiguous nature. I can't say that the script is strong, however. Quirky? Sure, but not something that really connected with me. And the bag scenes were ruined by previoius exposure to Family guy skits.

He does dominate the scenes he's in because its Kevin Spacey playing a great chatacter. I wouldn't say he carries the movie because even the scenes he's not in are still attention grabbing (scenes with the daughter and Mina Suvari or the creepy guy)

I have to agree that it's not all about Kevin Spacey's performance, and that each of the other characters are equally deep, even if not equally respectable.

^ Episode 1 was aired on TV the night before chapter 2 went cinema. Yes, these movies are all *too* control by oligopolic television corporations.

I also happened to run into some stuff from the set awhile ago at the museums in Ueno.

Pictures
