I think there'll be a lot of sudden posts in these threads on my part...I suppose it's the SR time of the month.
I love Mayakashi Yasaotoko now. It left me indifferent when SG was first released. It's like it begins with an establishing shot of a near-futuristic ancient Athens, then delves into a (F.Scott) Fitzgeraldesque exploration of the Dionysian Mysteries. That makes NO sense, but that's how vivid it is in my mind whenever I listen to it! It's just dark in a delicious way, lol And I know that Shun's supposed to be this smooth ballad, but Ringo's scratchy vocals really give the song an edge. Really, the only places where the album still fails for me (aside from the fact that generally, its highs aren't as high as the classic trilogy) is Futabocchi, Iroikoizata and Karisome Otome (Yokyou's arrangement really should have been the EXPO version, though) Last edited by Scribble R : 2012.01.06 at 07:24 AM. |

I love Mittei Monogatari. It's my favorite track on the album (at least for now). Phase 1 would have kicked its ass. I hope her next touring band plays it and does it justice.

I would give anything to see a movie based on Mittei Monogatari, styled like Casino Royale (the 1967 David Niven one, not the newfangled Daniel Craig one). Great song.

Whoever hasn't listened to Mittei Monogatari while driving at high speeds should really really try it. (Drive safe!)

My 2nd favorite track is Mayakashi Yasaotoko. It's one of the most exciting things Ringo has done, it has so much bite to it. When she sings "So no, let it go
There’s nothing left to say" I just swoon. The lyrics are SO GOOD too, the right kind of poetry without being too obtuse like most of Ringo's lyrics. "I recited lines by heart Scripted by your flawless art I am much to blame" Is particularly amazing. SG is probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite Ringo solo album. (It's a toss up between SG and HF). I only really hate Rodousha as a track, and I think otherwise Yokyou could have had an arrangement between the SG and Expo versions (keeping the SG orchestration but keeping the backing vocals and bringing the rock instruments more forward). My FAVORITE track is Bonsai Hada, because Ringo sings the SHIT out of that song and Coba is a virtuoso with the accordion. Ringo is channeling Edith Piaf so hard during Bonsai Hada, and the vocal runs during the last verse are breathtaking. I honestly feel like Bonsai Hada is the best raw vocal performance Ringo has EVER done. |

Even better than her vocals of Minatomachi Juusanbanchi?

I wish she'd also take a Phase 1 approach to Tsugou ii Karada, which itself sounds like it's been rearranged, with orchestra, based on a Phase 1 rendition of an (non-existent) earlier version of the song :-o
I don't think it's a great song, but I don't *quite* lump it in with the HF stuff (the song she did with her brother) because it's so ridiculously over the top and potentially obnoxious like Benkai Debussy or something (though not as interesting). It's not the kind of song you'd like if you're a person who lives a humble, peaceful life. I don't even know if I'm giving it a compliment or not. I just think its placement is essential to the overall feel of the album. And Ryuukou is like a more polite, 'lady-like' version of her kitchen sink style. Kitchen sink with pink rubber gloves.
