has anyone noticed the difference in mastering between this and the initial release of the single? If you don't own both they have both in iTunes music store Japan. The original release sounds so smooth whereas this one sounds louder and more...crunchy...almost low fi? I thought it was my cd at first or something and was ready to buy another and then I checked the music store and the preview they have sounds the same.

Why is that? Hmmm....I wonder if Ringo wanted to make it sound more "rock" to compensate for what the record execs forced her to do (supposedly) haha

either that or someone was lazy

I commented about that a couple times back in Ringo Jihen, but yeah, it's worth mentioning again, and I'm surprised you noticed it too, especially if you're using AACs.

I think you're mostly on the money, except the AAC format colors the sound in its own way, so some of the characteristics you're talking about have been exaggerated or minimized by AAC's own sonic bias. In using lossless, absolutely there's a difference between the two, though I wouldn't quite describe it the same way you've indicated.

But the re-release was definitely a remaster, even if an unannounced one. It's kind of a baffling concept for Americans because studios will remaster the shit out of everything just so they can re-release it and ADVERTISE it as a remaster. It's one of the most abused fads in recent years, but Japan remasters things all the time (like my Ghost In The Shell CD box) and declares NOTHING about it.

well the original was ripped to MP3 not using iTunes and I like to rip a lot of my ringo material lossless because I can't carry the cds overseas with me. takes up space but its worth it in the long run.

but my god, the remaster doesn't sound like a remaster, it sounds backwards, like the audio on the original sounds much smoother, unless it was ringo's intention to make it sound this way.

Maybe this has been posted before, but I just realized "Toki ga Bousou Suru" samples part of Mozart's "Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major, K. 331 - Andante grazioso"! I was watching LOST's episode 3x10 - "Tricia Tanaka Is Dead" when that Mozart's song started to sound as the BGM, and I was like "what?! Ringo on LOST?" hahaha!

Give it a listen (it doesn't allow me to post the video, idkw):
