Default SR and the Musical Talent/Group Size Correlation

So, it's not news in the sense of being new, but I came across this the other day and couldn't find it referenced elsewhere on EMF:

(Source) (Untranslated Source)

Of course I am immensely gratified to see Shiina Ringo in her rightful place, up in the Genius tier.

But as for the main premise of the chart, it got me thinking. Is it really accurate to say that musical quality decreases as the size of the band increases? SR would seem to provide the perfect test case, as she has performed both solo, and with Tokyo Jihen. Where would you put TJ on the chart?

No Togawa on this. Chart is wrong :-p

Boris probably would fit on top part.

Jihen I dunno, there's quite a lot that ventures into the cliche "J" tag so I don't think they'd make it into that "respected overseas" category. However, definitely would put them in the higher rungs of the central segment.

Interesting! You've pointed out a flaw in the chart that I hadn't considered - they have used the vertical axis to measure both talent and the opinion of overseas listeners.

So why isn't Togawa on the chart? I'm thinking it's because she doesn't fit the model. Based on talent alone, Togawa belongs at the upper left corner of the chart along with Ringo. But I doubt she could ever become really popular overseas - her music just isn't accessible enough.

I've tried to introduce Togawa/Guernica/Yapoos to like...a dozen people? The most common response is some variant of "she's talented, but..."

This chart is quality though. 100% okay with Shiina being below Yumi.

It's pretty common sense talented musicians like Ringo won't join a singing group like AKB48. Having more people in a singing group does not cause them to be less talented, these are less talented people in the first place. This study is worthless.

Speaking of talent, some AKB48 members are much better porn makers than Ringo, who hasn't made anything so far.

Was this done before or after Ringo lost her apple?

No Ryuichi Sakamoto or Keigo Oyamada. Chart is a joke.

I thought this graph was really interesting and not a total load of bullshit so I went to American College and asked the 100 students for an updated version, since this one's a couple years old. They gave me this.

also "K__ from Electric Mole Forums" was meant to be in the top left corner but they said they don't make graphs that high.

LOL

So, I had deliberately avoided posting my own thoughts about that chart to see what everybody else thought, but basically, I think that the theory as presented is BS. (Except for the part about Ringo being a genius, that part is fine.) When it comes to the act itself, size does not matter - the whole is generally equal to the average of the parts.

But if the theory were modified to reflect the number of people with creative control over the song writing/composition/arrangement, instead of the number of individuals in the band, I think it holds a bit more water. Sure, individuals may be good or bad, but when was the last time a song written under the influence of a committee/corporation/record label had the same power as a more personal artistic creation?

Also.... one day I wanna hear a group with as many members as AKB48 that are all singer songwriters put out a single...

MASS FUCKING CHAOS!
