its nice to see how much appreciation Ukigumo is getting as a songwriter (not guitarist) in here.

^ He sucks at both. Just a little less at songwriting.

I don't know, Jihad. I can see where Scribble's coming from with this one. Fukushuu seems a little too forced to me with its "hard" sound and "tough" lyrics. I mean, even when Ringo rocks out, there's still some undertone of jazz and this is just balls-to-the-wall rock...so, either is unexpected or unbelievable, but I don't think it's the best track on the album.

I don't really hear the jazz influences in MM or most of SS. And "Fukushuu" isn't a pure rock song to me -- not like Tadashii Machi or Yokushitsu or the like. The melody of the song heavily rests on her vocals, which are full and jazzy. (especially when she says "all you men wear that crown ")

I'll give you Koufukuron (the album version) and Byoushou Public (which I forgot about), but definitely not Morphine...that swings more than it rocks, and Gibusu has always struck me as a pop song dressed up as a rock song.

It's got a jerky beat, but it's not swing at all. I think you're expecting too much of the stereotypical hard rock sound. Bear in mind that even The Everly Brothers is rock.

really!? even the Everly Brothers!? and here I was thinking that Elvis Presley and Fats Domino were traditional enka singers.

Ringo can sprinkle in as much amp feedback as she wants to, but it's still not going to convince me that Morphine is in the same straight-ahead rocker vein as Fukushuu or Byoushou Public. OK, so all music is basically relative and every genre borrows from another, right? what I love about Ringo is that she can write a great pop hook and obscure it behind feedback and fuzzy guitars and walls of noise and found sounds and bleeps and blips, but I always hear the pop and jazz beneath it all. does that make sense?

blah

I'll admit to not knowing 'genre boundaries.' But Fukushuu is still dreadful, and sounds like it's trying too hard to be The Dark Rock Song! in the convoluted failure that is Variety.

The best Variety track is...oh, that's difficult. So many hits to choose from!

Edit:
Er, wrong thread to do this. Er, um, er, Kaban no Nakami!

Fukushuu sucks, I will give you that. It is easily among the worst track on the albums. It feels nothing like MM, are you on crack Jihad? It is so contrived...

I only remember SOTC from being there really but I remember BB King was quite enjoyable to jump around to at that show. However, I think what Variety lacked was subtlety. Jihen plays on PUFFY's Shuen no Onna. I had to check my cd twice to confirm it was them cuz the instrumentation is so subtle and low key. If only they could go back to being like that with Jihen. Like in Kaban no Nakami and even, dare I say it, Karada (although I dislike everything about that song, the band melds kind of nicely in a low key way).
