1. Shéna Ringo / Tokyo Jihen (it's hard for me to differentiate between the two, really, since Tokyo Jihen might as well be named The Shéna Ringo Experience )
2. The Beatles
3. John Lennon
4. Utada Hikaru
5. Alicia Keys

Of course, this list is subject to change at any minute.

The Shéna Ringo Experience, there's a ring(o) to it *flips out*

This may not be entirly related to the topic, but since I'm not a big J-music fan in general, what do you all recommand would be a good band/singer to start getting into? I'm mostly interest in stuff that the western music scene can't offer (hence SR), so what would be a good place to start?
And please, I dont wanna be hijacking the thread, so lets makes this short shall we?

Here are a few of my favorites:

Angela Aki - piano balladry that ranges from introspective to uplifting; think Tori Amos except half-Japanese and with Weezer glasses

Asobi Seksu - the band's based in NYC, but the lead singer doesn't shy away from singing in Japanese from time to time

Love Psychedelico - reminiscent of '60s & '70s rock 'n' roll

Mika Nakashima - a jazz/soul singer with a beautiful voice

Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra - mixes jazz, ska and rock wonderfully

Utada Hikaru - started out with Westernized R&B and has been progressing towards an experimental Pop sound lately

1) Tokyo Jihen / Shiina Ringo
2) The Beatles / Paul McCartney ( I know this is cheating, but if people can do it with TJ/SR, I'm going to strrrrretch it and do it with these guys )
3) The Newsboys ( a Christian band )
4) Muse
5) Radiohead

I actually really like Hail to the Thief. There are a couple tracks that I usually skip over, but I've found myself listening to the "I Will" / "A Punchup at a Wedding" / "Myxomatosis" threesome quite often. I also find "2+2=5," "Go to Sleep," and "We Suck Young Blood (though I'll never listen to it around other people)" to be amazing tracks.

However, I've found that I enjoy Radiohead so much more when I'm not listening to a specific album. If I have a playlist of all Radiohead, or if they're mixed in with other artists, I never skip any of their tracks. It's the same with Tokyo Jihen (though I could probably listen to Adult straight through for the rest of my life and be quite content).

*Is now constructing a Radiohead/Tokyo Jihen playlist*

As far as recommendations go, I second GO!GO!7188.

Links = Myspace or Youtube if no official Myspace:
Lisa Furukawa - Piano ballads, absolutely beautiful voice with most lyrics in english. She lives in the US and she's not really famous so I might have to post some of her stuff.
OLIVIA - I prefer her first two albums which are mainly trip-hop but if you prefer pop/pop rock go for the newer stuff. She's american so a lot of her songs have english in them.
SNoW - Acoustic/Pop/Rock with the occasional electronics. Influenced by Ani DiFranco and folk for the most part. Yet another american so plenty of english lyrics/english versions of songs.

And then other bands I wouldn't really recommend without knowing your tastes but will recommend anyway:

Aural Vampire - HIGH NRG techno/trance. Fun as hell.
BOaT & NATSUMEN - Same guitarists in both bands. BOaT has a singer and is mainly rock; NATSUMEN is instrumental jazz/rock/noise and whatnot. I couldn't find an actual video of BOaT [although there was one of NATSUMEN playing with BOaT audio] so I just linked an mp3.
Chihiro Onitsuka - Folk/Rock/Piano Ballads. Her voice is absolutely amazing.
