Small and plays anything that I have a codec for.

iTunes is the son of satan.

*tries to visualize Steve Jobs with devil horns*

Ahhh yes, the horns are the perfect fit when he tries to sell ringtones from songs you've already paid for, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, and it has to be a "participating song".

But giving credit where it's due, RealPlayer for Windows is far more evil than that. It always has been. And for whatever reason, the Mac version is the barebones no-nonsense player that the Windows version should've been. I'm not a Windows Media Player fan, but I'd rather install Real Alternative so I can load RealMedia files into Windows Media Player, instead having to open the official Windows version RealPlayer with all its garbage. Everytime one of my coworkers differentiates between "real" and "fake" categories of products/events, like "Golf is a REAL sport", I respond with something like "Oh, you mean a RealSport, like RealPlayer?". The one good thing that's ever come out of the existence of RealPlayer and its associated format(s), is that it allows me to spoof other things.

I use iTunes because, well, that damn iPod is mighty picky (I don't know why I haven't kicked it out of the house yet; what does it ever do for me!?).

I'm a slave to the Apple! I wish I was a slave to the Ringo.

Winamp *can* display Japanese characters in the newer versions, but everything feels kinda hacky about it so there are some places where you still might run into some garbled characters, like the Media Library etc.
Also I stopped using Winamp for video purposes, and now use a combination of WMP and VLC media player for that.

Windows media player because I can't stand iTunes and it works with LastFM. Plus, it's more aesthetically pleasing to me.

Ever since I set Winamp to use Arial Unicode MS as the playlist font, it hasn't had any trouble displaying any Japanese, Chinese or Cyrillic characters.

Itunes mostly but I also use WMP....mostly coz it came with the hardware ...I like Itunes slightly better though because I have more than one computer in my house and I can share music on the same network ending the need to transfer music from one system to the other (though if I want to rock a song in my ipod I still have to send it myself)...at least I can listen to music that is located in the CPU at the other end of my house...
WMP looks better but I've become so used to how the music in Itunes is organized (it seems like I have to scroll a lot more in WMP ) that I don't use it that much or miss it that much (though like I said it looks prettier)....
My friend uses something called Media Monkey...I think...she raves about it but I can't say for sure how much I'd like it.

Well for audio foobar2000, I am listening to maaya sakamoto's 30 minutes night flight on foobar as I type. I used to have winamp (video and music in the same package... it was great). But it started playing my videos with the sound out of sync, I was getting messed up kanji and stuff. Well The only thing I must say is I had this one plug in for winamp that let me listen to .spc files, oh that was heaven. Since I wiped my harddrive, I never replaced that, or the .spc collection I used to have... I should work on that. But anyways after winamp started f-ing up, I got on the web and started searching for media players. I heard that the simplest, most effective combo was foobar2000 for your music and media player classic for your movies (with the help of the cccp) and you can play anything you choose to download. Niether one has given me any trouble, but my foobar does not display my shiina kanji... it is weird, everyone else's kanji is cool, but not shiina's and thats a lot of stuff. What makes it worse random kaji does show up like kuki and shiina x neko, it is weird.

Had itunes before my ipod got stolen... I really did loathe itunes. But I loved the ipod, with its cute little pictures and such. But that gatdamn mp4 format, I hate it so. I spend hours converting my anime so it would fit on the ipod. Had half of baccano on there before it got stolen. Well I have a question is zune more "accepting" of video files, when compared to ipod? I need to by an mp3 player in the near future and I need to know if there is any reason I should not get an ipod.

I haven't ran into this problem myself, but I could imagine why. foobar2000 is a native UTF-8 player, and UTF-8 is a text palette of basically every character imaginable. But UTF-8 loading isn't exactly 'universal' for the same foreign characters that are somehow already saved in non-UTF-8, such as Shift_JIS.

Jonny also pointed out (I didn't already know this), that iD3v1 tags don't truly support UTF-8. So you have to make sure you're only using iD3v2. I'm normally using APE tags or Ogg tags, and they have absolutely zero problems with UTF-8, but then again I'm also pasting my Kanji into foobar2000 (from the Product Review pages). You might want to try that, since the Kanji you're having problems with, could've already been encoded in Shift_JIS, while foobar2000 should be able to overwrite that with a UTF-8 version. Your Kanji loading issues specific to Shiina Ringo, may also be related to how she interweaves hiragana and katakana, but once again I haven't had any problems with Kanji I've pasted into foobar2000.

In many instances (like for western albums) I'm not inputting artist/album/track names into foobar2000, but for Japanese albums, my ripping tool of choice doesn't support Shift_JIS or UTF-8, so when I hook up with freedb, all I get are question marks in-place of the Kanji. This is when Romaji (at least for the filenames) starts to become important. You might say "Well go find a ripper that supports UTF-8!", but my problem is no such ripper supports the error correction techniques I take for granted in Exact Audio Copy. So my policy is to let the specialist ripper do the ripping, and let the specialist player do the exotic tagging. All-in-one solutions are more often than not - compromised.
