Default Melody Gardot

Just have to give a shout out to this fabulous new vocal jazz artist called Melody Gardot. To compare her to Norah Jones would be a huge dishonour to Melody, but if you're in the mood for that kind of music I'm certain you will not be disappointed with Melody.

You can sample her songs at her official website.
http://www.melodygardot.com/
I suggest leaving the page open in the background and let the music play while you surf around.

She's currently touring Europe so if you're around the area be sure to catch her live!

I really enjoyed that, I heard troubling ways... I guess. But thats how I like my jazz, it was great. But kinda wished it was either the organ or the piano, I didn't want both, but either way, great chick. Too bad I am strictly japanese artists these days. I would add her to the list otherwise...

Why would you limit yourself like that?

Well to be honest, its just something I did. I decided I would go only japanese like 2 years ago.

I became interested in japanese culture. I should explain more, I want to move to japan so I wanted to absorb as much japanese culture as I can. That way I would be be able to dialog with japanese people about things they may be interested in, and I actually found that some japanese artists fit my tastes very well. And by japanese artists I am talking about non-video game music, which was the first japanese music I listened to. My first love, my favorite type of music! Anyways I just started finding so many awesome artists and pretty soon I only listened to japanese music. It should be noted that before my japanese craze the only music I listened to was rap and jazz. More rap than jazz. I did not really enjoy american pop, or rock, or country... none of that stuff. Not saying that I had not heard them, or that I disliked them, but rap and jazz were the only thing I brought into my house, the only things I obsessed over. Now after that I had found all these wonderful artist that fit into my mission, I guess I just involuntarily drifted into only japanese music. But when I realized I was listen to only japanese music, I said, well might as well keep it that way. Seeing as I control where I listen to music, I just never watch american tv or listen to american radio, I just kinda cut myself off from it. I never introduced myself to it. So its been a good 2 years in which I have not listened to an american... but with that site that was linked to above I heard my first american artist in a while. I liked it, but since my "metaphorical" musical plate is full with japanese artist, I have no room for her, but even if I did I would tell myself I'm only japanese anyways. So she would not get listen to by me anyways. Am I weird, probably so... but my style works for me. If people can not like my anime and manga for stupid reasons, I can not listen to miss gardot for stupid reasons.

Now let me say some things I have discovered in my 2 years. Big lol at this one. Most japanese who would talk to me (as an american), are not really interested in japanese music or culture (online or in real life). In fact I listen to much more japanese music than my girlfriend or her friends, most of the music they listen to is the generic "I'm on tv, listen to me because I'm pretty" music or american music. I find that the music I listen to is considered weird even for japanese tastes! Example YMCK, polysics, YMO (with the current generation), tsushimamire, perfume (well they are getting popular now so not so much). So I guess my original purpose is getting lost <laughs while scratching head> Uhm.. also japanese music really helps with my japanese listening skills, at times, lol. I learn random words from listening to music and translating the songs (fake wanna-be translating that is lmfao) really helps as well.

Anyways if you read this much, I am sure you head is hurting as my posts are usually one stream of conscienceness, lol. But I am weird. I just want to listen to japanese music exclusively. But let me stress that, I am very open-minded musically and just because I pursue only japanese music does not mean I am only capable of liking japanese music (its not like I look down on other types of music or anything).

I think we all have an interest in Japanese culture and music, else we wouldn't be here. And I can understand listening to mostly Japanese music as a preference, but why have rules on what you yourself can and can't listen to. I'll never understand why you'd hear an artist and think "I really like this, but I can't listen to it because of my own Japanese-only rule". It's not going to muddy the waters of your Japanese culture absorption or make you less interested in Japan.

If you've realized that Japanese people do not listen strictly to their own music and are not that absorbed in 'typical Japanese' aspects of their culture anyway, then why do you have to keep doing it? To continue to do so even after you've realized that listening to only Japanese artists is just going to make you stick out more than fit in, it seems extremely ridiculous and narrow-sighted. I strongly dislike that kind of behavior by foreigners learning Japanese/in Japan. I'm also not quite sure why you think erasing your sense of American culture and replacing it entirely with Japanese is such a great idea. It never is. In fact, American culture is the one thing most Japanese people are going to ask you about. Whether you like it or not, you're going to be almost like a representative of American culture over there, and you don't want to have to tell them "Uhh, actually I don't know, I've been avoiding it and only paying attention to yours..."

But you'll see that soon enough for yourself whenever you move to Japan. Leaving the culture you've been raised in and lived in your whole life to go somewhere that, after the honeymoon period wears off (and if you only visited before, you only experienced honeymoon), turns out to be extremely different from what you're used to--it's very tough. Culture shock is rough. And listening only to Japanese music isn't going to help at all with that.

As for Melody Gardot, I already enjoy Norah Jones so I gave her a try, and I really do like her music and plan to look into her more. Thanks for the rec justriiingo <3
