I miss the days when a heavy and loud SR tune sounded like Benkai Debussy.

Why were there no sales stats on the single? Anyone know what it did?

I can always count on Jihad for cute nicknames.

Thanks Scherbert! Are sales like that average, good or excellent?

Decent.
Well, considering the general trends of the Japanese recording industry, I'd say they were medocre single sales. All in all, here is some historic data:

[2000.01.26] Gips - 760,000 sales
[2000.01.26] Tsumi to Batsu - 550,000 sales
[2001.03.28] Mayonaka wa Junketsu - 360,000 sales
[2003.01.22] Stem - 187,000 sales
[2003.11.25] Ringo no Uta - 114,000 sales
[2004.09.08] Gunjou Biyori - 210,000 sales
[2004.10.20] Sounan - 124,000 sales
[2005.11.02] Shuraba - 110,000 sales
[2007.01.17] Kono Yo no Kagiri - 50,000 sales
[2007.07.11] OSCA - 50,000+ sales

While they are slowling losing more and more sales, that is the general trend of the industry in Japan right now. Identically, it is happening with every artist like Ayumi Hamasaki (her singles used to sell 1 million copies, now sell just shy of 100k to 200k), Utada, Gackt, ORANGE RANGE, etc.

The fact that Tokyo Jihen can still consistently debut in the top 3 spots shows their longevity and fan base.

How about mp3 sales? It was reported here in Canada that a recent Utada Hikaru single is now considered the highest selling mp3 single so far (~7 million downloads?).

I can totally see cd single sales decreasing but is there any organization that tracks music downloads?

Soundscan tracks mp3 downloads in the U.S., so I suspect Oricon has some system to do that too. I mean, the artists have to get paid their royalties somehow. I would be interested in seeing those figures.

As for the half-talking/screaming style bit...

I really like the vocals on Osca. I agree with the people who said an entire album like that would get old, but really, Shiina Ringo is all over the place so I wouldn't expect it. I find the new stuff refreshing.

Compare her to The High and Mighty Color. Intense music + banal vocals = blecch.

I can't see why people would prefer to pay for mp3s over physical cds. Why not just buy the single and then rip the audio?
