I saw the Thing this weekend. I'm a big fan of Carpenter's original (well, technically that too was a remake) and my feelings for this aren't quite clear. I applaud their designs and overall pacing and atmosphere. It definitely felt very European. I laud the studio's interference with character development, focus on rushing through the opening to get to the creature, and insistence on hampering all the practical work with extra CGI. I'm sure it would have looked AMAZING with just the puppetry but the CGI made it feel oddly dated....The Thing still holds up to this day due to the practical effects...its sad that film companies don't trust in their filmmakers and think they can read the audience...time and time again it FAILS. but it is still highly recommended, just because it is utterly unlike most of the other horror movies to come out this year...I applaud it for trying something new and different amongst all this slasher porn remake bullshit. |

I saw it and my reaction was the same as my local newspapers:
The Thing (2011) is no thing

Should I watch Coraline? I read the book, have the movie... didn't really like the book though, wondering if it's worth my time. Also wondering if it will freak me out.

It's actually not that creepy. It's rather cartoonish. I was disappointed because I feel like they ruined a good horror story for kids with cartoon visuals because children need to be babied.

Was Coraline meant to be particularly disturbing? I didn't think the book was that edgy.
Anyone seen Drive? I've heard good things. |

Drive started out good and then just got ridiculous. All the violence came out of nowhere. But the soundtrack and opening sequence are awesome.

Coraline is edgy FOR A CHILDREN'S BOOK. If you're 8 and read it, it will probably scare you. If you're 24, you'll think it's just a little weird.
Imagine if the film was made in the style of Dave McKean! I would shit myself. |

coraline is for children. it caused a controversy when it was released because children had to be escorted out of theaters because they couldn't get through the opening credits without bawling. with shit like Veggie Tales and Dolphin Tale in theatre, how can you even remotely claim it was babying them. even neil gaiman thought the movie was a perfect representation of the book. the movie is deeply disturbing. they didn't ruin the look or feel at all. the movie was pretty much universally loved by critics and fans alike and I'm sure if you had your way, based on your comments, you would have it look like Nightmore Before Christmas. snoooooooreeee. been there, done that, it was boring and it was called Corpse Bride. Coraline is colorful and yet dark at the same time, that is quite an achievement in my book. Frecklegirl, definitely give it a go. |
