I'm not usually into this sort of post-punk/progressive rock sound, but WOW. I'm looking at more Japanese rock bands lately, I saw these guys on generasia. INSTANT FAN. [[BTW, I'm looking, but it's hard to sift through the Visual Kei bullshit. Any recommendations?]] |

Been listening to the remastered re-release a fair bit. Mishio Ogawa is vocalist. I'm hoping they're gonna re-release the set of releases, fingers crossed I love the outro for this song, showcases Mishio's amazing voice.

Maybe The Back Horn. Maaaaaybe Maximum the Hormone, just for exhibiting so much sheer variety. Also, they make pretty much the best PVs ever. I actually have yet to find a band of quite the same caliber as RTS. They're pretty unique. Have some videos.
Listening to this, since "bands sounding similar to Rin toshite shigue" reminded me of it, not that they do. I always have the hardest time finding this video on Youtube since I never can remember the name of the song, and this is their only good one.

Recommendation time! If you like Tokyo Jihen...
If you like Tokyo Jihen, you should check out NY quintet Twin Sister and their most recent album In Heaven. Like Jihen, they revolve around a loosely retro-60's sound. In my opinion, they have a much tighter sound, and fall into some nice grooves. Now of course anyone who listens to Tokyo Jihen does so because Shiina Ringo is the singer. Shiina Ringo is not the singer for Twin Sister, however singer Andrea Estrella does a charming job and adds her own texture. Some selected works:
Their album In Heaven is solid pop listen that hooks your ears well enough to inspire re-listens. You could do much worse.

Fred Frith - Carnival on Wall Street
I'd like to dedicate this to Occupy Wall Street and related efforts:

I've realized how much I dislike mellow, ambient music, regardless of genre. Dunno what it is, but in most cases I really need what I listen to have some sort of energy or spark to it. Even ballads I prefer to have a lot of movement and grandeur.
Related: Listening to Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the Key of Life" in between (re)working on the bassline to Blackout (as in Jihen), since I'm really rusty on it and it's really difficult because, unlike most songs, you have to follow very specific right-hand fingering or you'll completely butcher it. |
