Horror remakes should call themselves something else. Even the pretty good ones lately, like Last House on the Left, which in some ways improve on the original (usually in terms of acting/cinematography/editing, i.e. the stuff young broke filmmakers of the 1970s didn't have access to)----just don't measure up. It's something, but it's not the original. Just call it Daddy's Revenge or something. Just like the original Last House didn't call itself The Virgin Spring (the Swedish flick it remade).
The Carrie thing has me all wigged out. The original is one of my 3 favorite horror movies of all time, and it was already remade once. I actually liked the sequel, The Rage, but I don't know..... One thing is, the original had a cast looked way too old for high school. Sissy Spacek was 27 when she made it. And her classmates seemed to vary between 25 and 45. Chloe Moretz is a teenager playing a teenager, so that might add something. But it's not going to be---or beat---the De Palma classic. |

wow, the Darjeeling Limited really sucked. I originally wanted to watch it when it came out bc I thought Adrien Brody was hot... and then it took me about four years to get around to watching it... and well, he is attractive in this movie, but otherwise it blew. Why do people say the Life Aquatic was Wes Anderson's shitty movie? Maybe it's just my naive college self talking, but I really liked that movie (or maybe I just liked gay Jeff Goldblum).

... Darjeeling Limited is one of my favorite movies ever :-p
After rewatching Wes Anderson's movies many times, Life Aquatic definitely is the weakest/most one dimensional film in his catalog. I still enjoy it, but its no Royal Tennenbaums, which gets richer and richer with each subsequent viewing.

Royal Tenenbaums is my favorite. I connected with that movie on such a weird level, there hasn't been a movie like it that has been able to manipulate my own emotions so easily.
I liked Darjeeling Limited, but thought it worked much better as a comedy than a drama. And I really hated the whole "Magic Indians teach you how to be happy" angle. Yuck. |

What were people's favourite movies this year? I'm not gonna go in depth with mine like my albums, mainly cause I can't be bothered, but my top 5:
5. Looper- pretty decent science fiction film, good action and a nice Bladreunner kinda vibe. Check it out if you like this kinda thing. 4. Skyfall- definitely the best blockbuster of the year, seen it twice and appreciate it more on second viewing. This spot was originally for Dark Knight Rises but I feel that movie fell flat on second viewing. 3. Excision- ouch. I know, we've seen it all before, troubled teen life (think movies like May or the non-werewolf parts on Ginger Snaps) blah blah, but I feel this one manages to take it to really skin crawling heights. Some genuinely disturbing undertones and cool dream sequences. The ending was pretty great too. 2. Lawless- I goddamn love this movie, it's intense, funny and its violence has a real purpose. Oh and it has one of the best soundtracks you will come across all year. 1. Moonrise Kingdom- Yeah, yeah, it's a Wes Anderson film. But it's the BEST Wes Anderson film since Royal Tennenbaums. Surprisingly accessible, bizarre and beautiful (both emotionally and cinematography-wise). So what else did people like? I need to watch some more films :-p

I'm a bit apprehensive since I didn't enjoy Inglourious Basterds that much. I love Tarantino's other work though. I even like Death Proof (which everyone seems to hate).

Inglourious Basterds was the point where Tarantino's ego became unbearable.

Why are any of you singling out Inglourious Basterds, as the point in time where Quentin Tarantino lost any trust from you? What did all his previous films do right, that Inglourious Basterds did wrong? I'm not saying it's his greatest film or anything, but what did you seriously expect from it? Which aspects of the film would you have done differently?

Thats what I was thinking, why single out Basterds for being so Tarantino-ish when he's got a whole library that speaks as loudly. Yeah, Basterds can be in to itself, but the whole package is fills the order where other's have deflated (*cough*Kill Bill*cough*)
