Marié Digby covers Gibbs
I think Marié Digby is mostly known for being the musical version of LonelyGirl15- she got super popular on Youtube and her acoustic cover of Rihanna's "Umbrella" was featured on a few shows/radio stations.
it was later revealed that she already had a record deal and her label was very much involved in her "grassroots" youtube endeavor. This of course caused some controversy (check out this Wall Street Journal article if you're interested). anyway, like any other good looking half Japanese person in existence, she got a record deal in Japan (with Avex). She recently released a cover album of Japanese songs called Second Home- 1. Cherry - Spitz 2. Theme Of 'Es' - Mr. Children 3. Gravity - Luna Sea 4. As Of Monday - ElephantKashimashi 5. Gibbs - Shiina Ringo 6. Friendly Feeling - Chara 7. Nada Sou Sou - Rimi Natsukawa 8. Piece Of My Wish - Miki Imai 9. Kimi To Iu Hana - Asian Kung-Fu Generation 10. Gentle Smile - Shiraishi 11. I Like - Banzai 12. Love Love Love - Dreams Do Come True I had no luck finding this song online yet. Did any of you listen to it? where/how? EDIT: whooops... I got the dates mixed up. The album wasn't released yet... the official release date is March 4th. I'll keep an eye out for it and if I find anything I'll post it here. Shouldn't they know the name of the band she's covering which also happens to be the best band to ever exist?

Yeah, not to mention "Gibbs"...
Anyway, looks like a cool tracklist. The Polysics version of Cherry is one of my favourite things ever. Thanks for the info grumble! |

the track can now be previewed on the official Avex website... it's track #4.
I think this version proves that it's really Ringo's voice and character that gave the original some "oomph". Without it the song is kind of anemic. |

hahahahhahahhaa
this is so great. the original demo sounds like an outtake from a middle school dance, and this version sounds like hannah montana takes a song from ringo's catalogue. goes to show you how much the production influences a song. still, the only reason why ringo's is so great is because the dark tone and heavy guitar really provide a perfect contrast and framework for the lyrics, otherwise its just a pop-rock love song lyrically. still, one of the top greatest songs ringo has written, this version just murders it. |

I just thought it was generic and boring. Not really good OR bad. They should have just done a bare bones acoustic version likes the ones that made that girl famous on youtube. EDIT: gaah I just listened to the demo version and "outtake from a middle school dance" describes it so perfectly. It even sounds like someone used an old school minidisc player to record it from the back of the school gym. Last edited by a_grumble_cake : 2009.02.26 at 03:10 AM. |

Hmmm, the Kabukichou cover at least had, huh, soul. This is is like a zombie version of "Gips". I really hate it, sorry =P
EDIT: One of the best Ringo covers I heard (and remember) is that "Keshou Naoshi" one, by the japanese-brazilian singer. Last edited by ShinjiPG : 2009.02.26 at 03:51 AM. |
