Default Korean Music

Ok, now, as far as I know, the Korean pop music scene is all the same, either girl bands (Brown Eyed Girls etc) or guy bands (Epik High etc).

Can someone recommend some stuff that is NOT this kind of music? Or does it simply not exist?

You're probably not going to have any luck with the mainstream, but Korean music can be pretty good.

Some (old/new/indie) artists to check out:
Patti Kim - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkFAdB1UKrM
Peppertones - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oANgEQ4f5Gc
The Black Skirts (검정치마) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiOF7dkxVaA
Pearl Sisters - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTcpdg6MS6g
Jaurim (자우림) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwcJlBLZCAE
Cherry Filter - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6EcOiKWfZI
Clazziquai - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gx8Se_6lZTM
Nell - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fkMp1nBqRw
Shin Joong Hyun (신중현) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaMwsWLsSKE

I was probably as hopeless as you were before I discovered these or my friends showed some of these artists to me. These may not be your type, but hopefully they'll at least convince you that the Korean music scene is more diverse than can seem. The Korean music industry is... grim.

My 2 favorites, Jaurim and The Pearl Sisters were already mentioned. But they're pretty much the best of Korean music.

누구라도 그러하듯이

That's one half of the Pearl Sisters. I tried to find this song on LP before I left Korea, but to no avail. I loves it soo much.

파애

거지

When they sung this song live, it was EPIC. And my love for it increased tenfold.

yaaaaaaaaaaay my favorites.

Haha, I actually went vinyl shopping yesterday for Pearl Sisters, but also to no avail. Do you know any decent places to shop in Seoul, though? I went to the underground shopping center in Myeongdong, but otherwise I haven't gotten a chance to look around.

On the other hand, there were plenty of Patti Kim records. And Koreans also LOVE Beatles.

Ok watched them, a few I like, it's surpising how many of these 'indie' bands sound like Australian indie music- not really my thing. What about on the other side of the spectrum- something a little on the heavy metal scene? Is there a metal scene?

This is a new band called Walrus. Yes that walrus.

Seoul Witch

This one is a total rip from Radio Friendly Unit Shifter. But nobody will notice.
