Default SR-related 90s alt-rock figures -- where/how are they now?

Sometimes when reading or doing work at home I'll put on a music TV station of a certain period. Recently I had the 90s station on, and Alanis Morissette's Thank U came on. Great stuff, of course a bit of an "SR" sound, and yet I couldn't help thinking, "what happened to her?"

In fact, where are all the other iconic 90s alt-rock queens we compare to SR?

Alanis Morissette
Tori Amos
Kate Bush
Courtney Love
Bjork
P.J. Harvey
Liz Phair
Shirley Manson

Who's still relevant? Who isn't? At this point, does SR even rank with any of them?

P.J. Harvey, Bjork and Tori Amos are still around. Each have put out albums in the last 2 or 3 years. I can't speak for the other artists. Bjork is the artist I've listened to the most out of all 3 of these and SR certainly ranks against her, though I wouldn't compare them. There are only a couple songs from Shiina where I thought, "Whoa, this really sounds like a Bjork song".

They're replaced by younger artists like St Vincent and million other whatshernames on Jihad's top list.

For me, they're replaced by Midori, Ringo and Japanese idols with their snappy electro-pop songs.

And since when is Kate Bush 90's alt-rock queen?

Good point. I'm confusing actual fame with "the time I was listening to it."

I think it's more fair to compare her to her 90's alt/rock Japanese contemporaries (who she was directly competing with/interacting with).
Artists like Coco, Bonnie Pink, UA, YUKI, Chara, Higurashi Aiha, etc.
And I think compared to them she is doing better in terms of maintaining steadier sales, Tokyo Jihen really extended her "lifespan" so to speak.

-PJ Harvey is by FAR the best out of Nimhs list and still makes genuine mind-blowers. (Let England Shake really showed newbies how it's done IMO)
-Bjork is good, not a crowd pleaser anymore though.
-Tori Amos is wretched now, but there's ever so slight glimmer of hope for her new album this year.
-Kate Bush is still respected but can't sing like she used to. Though yeah, she's more a 70s/80s icon...
-Liz Phair bahahaha- the best thing about her is how bad she keeps getting. Check out Funstyle and you'll swear an album like Variety is a masterpiece...
-Courtney Love I can still enjoy when she decides to get out of bed and make something. In the minority who actually liked the new Hole album...

As for Alanis and Shirley- didn't follow them in their heyday, won't bother now. I mean, I'm pretty aware of their bigger albums (who doesn't own Jagged Little Pill) but neither really grabbed me like the rest on this list.

As for Ringo, it's only MM and SS you can compare, after that she's nothing alike. KZK does get it's Bjork comparisons, but that's laziness/noob talk... EVERYTHING gets compared to Bjork if it's slightly "weird" I've noticed. Grow your own brain people

Before we analayze anything, just want to reconstruct the J-pop world in the late 1990's - early 2000's, a time when female singer songwriters thrived, seems Ringo had fierce competition:

1986 - 1992 Bjork sucking big time in Sugarcubes
1991.09.17 Hole - Pretty On The Inside (debut)
1991.11.01 Chara – Sweet (debut)
1992.01.13 Tori Amos - Little Earthequakes (debut)
1992.03.30 PJ Harvey – Dry (debut)
1992.04.00 Judy and Mary - Be Ambitious (debut)
1993.06.22 Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville (debut)
1995.06.09 Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill (debut)
1995.10.16 Namie Amuro - Dance Tracks Vol. 1 (debut)

The period between 1994 and 1997 was dominated by dance and techno acts from the "Komuro family" (小室ファミリー Komuro Famirī?), such as TRF, Ryoko Shinohara, Yuki Uchida, Namie Amuro, Hitomi, Globe, Tomomi Kahala, and Ami Suzuki. (wikipedia)

1995.10.21 UA – Petit (debut)

By the late 1990s, the girl group Speed was very popular; they announced their disbandment in 1999... Morning Musume, produced by Tsunku, former leader of band Sharam Q became very popular, with a string of releases that were sales hits before even being released. The group's popularity gave origin to the Hello! Project. (wikipedia)

1998.07.22 Nanase Aikawa - crimson
1999.01.01 Ayumi Hamasaki - A Song for XX (debut)
1999.02.24 Ringo - Muzai Moratorium (debut)

The late 1990s saw the popularity of rock bands, such as Glay, Luna Sea, and L'Arc-en-Ciel, most of them related to the visual kei movement, though they later changed their style. At the time, rock musicians in Japan were absorbing kayōkyoku music after the genre vanished...In the late 1990s and early 21st century, female singers such as Hikaru Utada, Ayumi Hamasaki, Misia, Mai Kuraki, and Ringo Shiina became chart-toppers who write their own songs or their own lyrics. The Japanese market for physical music sales peaked in 1998, recording sales of ¥607 billion. In March 1999, Hikaru Utada released her first Japanese album, First Love, which sold 7.65 million copies, making it the best-selling album in Oricon history.(wikipedia)

So, comparatively speaking, Japan took over female alt-rock post-1995?

Nanase Aikawa! Never thought I'd see her mentioned again on EMF in a positive context. I liked her sound.

No...PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, Bjork etc dominated 90's in the west. Japanese female alt-rock started talking off in the mid 90's, not taking over (plus Japan's music industry survives on its own and is separated from the west). I just wanted to point out there are several other big-selling "alt-rock queens" in Japan before Ringo. Honestly I think she's more of a 00's artist.
