Have not watched 20th century boys yet but local press gave very low rating for it, saying that some tighter editing might have done justice to the plot.

Is it that bad?

I love Japanese movies but have been really selective when it comes to adaptation of manga due to the painful experience with "Death Note" (wat a crap)

this weekend I rewatched with my friends the movie that it's probably my favorite ever...
cutie honey, that live action from 2004
OMG
how could they unite my favorite things in the world (hideaki anno/gainax, go nagai/cutiehoney) and make it work so perfectly *-*
watching it makes my joy of live grow a lot
makes me wanna watch it everyday >_<

There is the Tokyo Intl Film Festival going on right now, but I don't really have the time to go there. But there seems to be quite a lot sexy movies... :-(

I watched twice and felt something unsatisfactory.
I thought weakness of the film is caused by original story itself
(as opposed to many reviewers who loves 20CB manga).

Being faithful to original is way to avoid criticism from great number of fans of 20CB.
But movie and manga is completely different medium.
So if they would make it as good movie, they should have courage to reconstruct entirely.
That is surely cause anger from manga fans and if movie itself fails (it likey occurs)
it results no supports from anyone.

Agree. I do not notice this until you pointed it out.
Look at how American movie makers transferred the characters from comic book to silver screen, I think it's quite impossible for Japanese peers to do the same. Especially when 20CB has one of the most intricate novel-styled plot ever.

Well, I don't know. I think I will watch the movie eventually. Who gives the shit about local review. They gave a lot of my fav movies lousy ratings anyway.. I think my taste has become problematic in term of mainstream entertainment.

I think it's the same problem with Max Payne. I haven't watched it yet though, but hearing the bad criticism, I see the same problem when going from one medium to another. What works in the first one doesn't necessarily work in the next one, simple as that. To make 20CB or Max Payne work as movies, maybe they have to be changed quite a lot, and then what is the point, just make a new story that fits the movie format better in the first place. It's like coke, it worked very well as a drink, so why don't we make "Coke bread"? We don't because we expect other properties of the bread. There are of course cases where a story could work in several media, but for instance in 20CB and Max Payne's cases they both have interesting stories but at the same time I think they owe a lot by being a manga or being a game.

Meh, that's what I said before the movie came out (not on emf tho), 20CB is one of the works that more extensively uses every aspect of "manga language". It would be difficult to simply convert it to any other medium.
Monster, on the other hand, worked great as a tv-series (even if it was anime), because Urasawa really managed to draw the "feeling" of a movie, in terms of the pictures and narrative structure, and I bet that was what he really wanted to do. In the end, it almost turned out like a storyboard, so the process of adapting it to tv couldn't have been easier.
Now with 20CB (and again with his new manga Billy Bat), the point is, without a doubt, to use the pages in the most unique and exclusive way.
YET, it's not impossible to adapt the story to another medium, not at all. It just can't be straight-away... Adapting has to be the keyword. I always feared they wouldn't take that into consideration, but I still have some hope that I will like it when I see it.
