Nothing tops the Marvelettes' version for me. The covers lack the 'soul' of the original (Not to be cliche about things). When I listen to the Carpenters' version I think 'what was the point of that?'

To each his own, but anyone that doesn't think The Beatles "Mr. Postman" is the better version is fairly wrong.

Certainly not the typical list but I managed to narrow it down to 10. If the entire Abbey Road medley could be listed as a song, I would have listed it instead of just The End because it's damn near flawless. But I consider that cheating so I just posted my single favorite part. Yay for a Ringo drum solo!

1. Happiness is a Warm Gun
2. The End
3. Penny Lane
4. Across the Universe
5. Lovely Rita
6. Nowhere Man
7. Eleanor Rigby
8. I'm Only Sleeping
9. Something
10. She Said She Said

ohh nice, i hadn't seen this thread. i think i've actually narrowed it to a top five, not in order, though:

yer blues
norwegian wood
don't let me down
girl
across the universe

i had a day in the life in there, but i realized that though it is a song that i really love to hear and appreciate, when i need my music as some sort of catharsis, i go to these more often. don't let me down is probably my number 1, though. it's one of those song that has enough hard bits and soft bits, that balance to work all the time.
i think i would maybe switch norwegian wood with "she's so heavy," though. not sure. or actually, probably strawberry fields. that song should really be on my list. i haven't listened to it enough for some reason, maybe because i don't listen to magical mystery tour all that much. but it really is an amazing song.
i'd fill it with my top 10 but i had thought this list a lot more before so i figured i'd just put it up like this.

John does tend to have deeper lyrics, but I'm surprised you left Paul off of that list entirely, Hedo. :O

1 and 2 have been my favourite Beatles songs since I heard them, especially Julia. Not sure how to order the rest but will give the number 3 spot to Lovely Rita because that was my favourite Beatles song as a kid. From that time I have a love/hate relationship with A Day In The Life in that the ending used to scare the crap out of me, but that added a sort of thrill to what went before. I'm dealing with the problem of how to place the Abbey Road medley by pretending it doesn't exist.

1. Julia
2. Ticket to Ride
3. Lovely Rita
4. And I Love Her
5. I'm Only Sleeping
6. Oh! Darling
7. Across the Universe
8. In My Life
9. Something
10. A Day in the Life

Songs that might make the list in cover version form
- Caetano Veloso - For No-One
- En Vogue - Yesterday

Oh yeah, reviving a dead thread baby!

1. I Want You (She's So Heavy)
2. You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)
3. I Me Mine
4. The Night Before
5. Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band (reprise)
6. Hey Jude
7. You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
8. Flying
9. Hey Bulldog
10. Tomorrow Never Knows

I used to listen to them heaps, not so much anymore. Should listen to them a bit more in the near future. Guess I overplayed them or something.

Oh and the 2009 stereo remasters can suck a dick. More distracting than anything. The only thing worse is that "Love" monstrosity.

Thank god for the mono versions.

Yeah, that'll do.

Only the first four albums have the "distracting" separating of the audio.

The 2009 remasters are excellent. I'll take them any day of the week to "clip-all-the-waveformzz!" remasters that you see everywhere else.

/not looking forward to the upcoming SP remasters because of this.

EDIT: Personally, I prefer the stereo versions to the mono of those albums. The music just has more room and has greater clarity. I'm not including completely different mixes like you hear on Peppers and the White Album.
