Forgot to add this, but the album will also come with a short novel.
To celebrate the 20 year career of incredible Japanese artist Sheena Ringo, a special tribute album will be released on 23 May 2018!
The concept of the record is to ‘go beyond’ – beyond generations, beyond music genres and beyond all borders.
There will also be a special short novel by million selling writer Tesuya Honda for the CD booklet.

nice update! just want to add that it's pretty hard for song lyrics to translate so effortlessly to rap and the fact that it sounds good here is really testament to how good of a writer SR is. it's easy to get caught up with her theatrics and showmanship but the fact that she's an excellent lyrical writer with a real commitment to her craft seems to be under-discussed these days

So what does everyone think of the new samples that were just released?

I couldn't find Fujiwara Sakura's or Matsu Takako's, but the others were sadly very boring. I expected nothing and I'm still left disappointed. At least with the first batch of previews, the artists managed to put their own spin on Ringo's material. Utada's cover was exactly what I expected (a duller version of EXPO) and LiSA somehow made NIPPON even more unbearable (and I say this as someone who likes Schroeder-Headz!). Surely Ringo has more clout than this album would suggest; she can get better acts to cover her than Shiritsu Ebisu Chuugaku and LiSA, right? Even Chatmonchy had a better lineup for their tribute album with the likes of CHAI and Kinoko Teikoku.

For me, there is some inherent appeal in most of the covers, just from the standpoint of liking the source material and being able to look at it afresh with a performance that I don't already have memorized. But I also kind of feel like the artists/performances were carefully selected so as not to outshine her or deviate too much from the original. Some of it even feels like what Ringo herself would have done with the material if she were releasing it today instead of ~20 years ago.

Yes, you're right. I suppose that's why I'm disappointed though, I want to hear new artists and not the familiar sounds of her collaborators like Tomita Lab, Kameda and Rekishi.

This is about as dull as the Utada Hikaru tribute album. And that had Ringo and Hamsandwich on it
