FYI: I am back in Tokyo and have been promptly greeted by two big aftershocks. Annoying as hell but daily life is a little better than when I left.

We're back too, I went back and forth with my wife. There's still aftershocks, especially today there were a huge amount affecting my area (saitama/tokyo). It feels like the world is going down, and even if it isnt, unfortunately they didn't build power plants that hold here, or at least they built some of them right at a coast with lots of tsunami. There was a demo against nuclear power yesterday here in Koenji, they got like 15000 people which really isn't much but still there's no word about it in the media/tv. The media/gvt/company conspiracy talks just go on and on.
Work is troublesome of course especially since I'm in a Japanese company with 100% Japanese customs which means it's hard to get leaves at all, and trying to get permission to work from home is mostly pointless. However I did, but I have to go freelance in the end, well actually from next week. I normally wouldn't mind, but it will come kind of suddenly. I sure as hell prefer to stay at home with the wife for now. I'll also be able to faster relocate to Kansai or south if needed, and we're probably going soon if any more bad news pile up.

Take good care, Jonny. I haven't been in Japan long enough to make deep connections---a few friends and teachers and colleagues, and lots of time doing research, but no job or family here. I'm not sure what I would do in your position.

Some disturbing news here, including word of Fukushima news being officially suppressed in Japan (unless it supports the official line):

Alas, I know nothing about physics, but this person seems like a reliable source of Fukushima-related news and analysis:

(Not that you aren't all capable of finding this sort of thing yourselves.)

Ah, radiation. Can't see it, can't smell it, can only fear it.

I certainly think that the Japanese government and the Nuclear Plant staff did not handle the disaster properly nor take the proper precautions for such a risk.
However, I also think the incompetence of the staff and the government should not discredit nuclear energy. We are already seeing backlash against Nuclear energy itself, instead of the more logical and viable solutions of stricter safety regulations.

"stricter safety regulations" ? Yeah, you are right, let's try harder, let's keep on playing with fire... Let them play with our lives until the next disaster... NUKE MEANS DEATH.
