I've heard of The Grates before. They did that song 19 20 20, right? I really liked that, but when I looked at another one of their songs, it was slow so I lost interest.

I do like Cameo Lover more than Settle Down, but I can definitely understand how something being overplayed can really affect how enjoyable it is. If I heard St. Vincent on the radio constantly I would definitely come to hate her music.

I'm a university student, so that probably explains why I'm into her

Thanks folks. I'm liking Kimbra so far, though not sure how much. I don't see the big appeal of Gotye (especially his vocals) at this point, however. Tried some of the Teedra Moses, which I liked more than expected, but the bedroom R&B vibe kind of got tiresome to me. I will probably give the remix a couple more tries, at least.

(Later: feeling more sure of Kimbra, though puzzled that this isn't the sort of thing I normally get into. But then most of the new music I've enjoyed this year has been not the sort of thing I listen to.)

Kimbra isn't just good at singing.

She totally manipulates the microphone. Varying the distances and angles between the microphone and her to create different sounds.

Even to the extent of moving her bodies to create different sounds. That is true work of a genius.

@SuperficialFan:

Thanks for listening to the Teedra Moses. I'm not sure it will appeal to anyone who doesn't already have a prediliction for "bedroom R&B" (perhaps trip-hop/Portishead people might also like it) but I think the vocal arrangements are particularly good (e.g Get Free towards the end) and she's strengthening beyond her first album that got very good reviews.

While I love loop-driven jams like "Special", she's got a knack for doing something different with a middle eight when she does use a conventional song structure so I wish she'd use them more.

...

CLT Todd Rundgren for the first time. I Saw The Light and Hello, It's Me are amazing singles (he's not as famous here as he is in the States or possibly elsewhere, never heard them before).

A Wizard / A True Star is another SS/KZK/Madvillainy/Sgt Pepper in terms of the number of ideas per track, and oddly draining to take in at once. Still... wow.

Great songs. So familiar it's difficult for me to imagine not knowing them. Oddly, I've never gotten into much else that he did or was involved with (and I had a friend who had a bunch of his music, so I had some exposure).

There's a guitar lick on "Honnou" that reminds me of Todd.

I do think there's some interesting stuff going on in the Teedra Moses, but again, probably just not my thing (especially right at the moment).

It better not have been Turn Me On

That's the song I test people's taste and whether to take seriously or not when it comes to music :-p

That, and Teinen Pushiganga by Jun Togawa

I know Todd Rundgren from Sofia Coppola's movie The Virgin Suicides.
That scene w/ Hello it's me... so damn good.
