I doubt Shiina has much input into how her music is mixed and mastered in the end, unless she was the one producing the album.

I could swear there was a quote from her posted in one of these threads talking about how she was working late nights on the production of the album prior to release. Something about working late and having to be up early because of the baby.

^ That does sound familiar, actually. However, we have no idea what she was actually working on in that regard. Unless she specifically said she was mixing/mastering, etc. Shiina doesn't strike me as much of a sound engineer, but I could be wrong.

Whatever way, mastering on Sunny is uber fucked

Mixer/Masterer: Here's the final mix. Shiina: ARE YOU DEAF?? This shit has waaayy too much sub-bass and mids! And I sound like a dirty old hag; kawaii my voice more! Oh, and add a little more sparkle and presence... on second thought, make that plenty. Mixer/Masterer: Uhhhhh.... (complies anyway because there's no arguing with the queen) (and of course, they'd be in japanese) Exactly. |

^ I'm pretty sure she has some input on mastering/production, based on that lengthy 100 questions interview, or something. But in any case, I concur, the mixing on Sunny wasn't great. Nor was Re:Import.

The main issue is that the mastering is fucked up even on songs that sounded fine(ish) on previous releases. Very concerning.

Eh, thats what I thought about the record before this. Once I embraced it, I found I enjoyed it.

I wouldn't say it's "very concerning", because mastering of this sort seems to be the industry standard on major record labels these days.

The old Loudness War again? Maybe. But I did notice with both Sunny and Reimport that they sounded better with the treble (in the car) turned down...usually I'm turning it up if adjusting it at all, even with recent recordings
