It always seems to me the majority of EMF listens to a lot of rock, especially new bands where I'm often not quite as much at home...

I think I stopped listening to "normal/standard/popular" rock bands around 1978.

I think there's still good rock acts these days. They're just harder to find. Popular music's in a bit of a slump right now in the areas of rock and rap.

In some ways we're just being 40somethings, lol. I don't think rock is particularly worse, just that it hasn't progressed much. That really depends on what you call "rock", of course. I actually spend my time at a late 70's-early 80's alternative music blog, The Post Punk Progressive Pop Party.

Maybe I'm a big old sap, but I like Taylor Swift, or at least a bunch of the songs from her CD that came out last year. (Otherwise I'm not too familiar.) As others have commented, she pulls off writing about writing about middle America, normal (hyper-normal?) (certainly not my own personal experience or anything), high school realities in a way that isn't completely ridiculous. Or more to the point, I genuinely find some of her songs pretty moving, and I'm not sure what it is about them, but I think she's a decent lyricist. What's weird is that in some cases I recognize, ah yes, this song is sub-genre x (I don't necessarily have a label--but say, "Why you should go out with me instead of that other girl") like other pop songs I've heard and generally not liked, but for some reason I like this one. "White Horse" chokes me up a little. I probably am a big old sap. Musically, there's not much to appeal to me there, but the lyrics and probably something about her delivery hook me in (though I'm certainly not wowed by her voice).
