As much as I hated HF, its the album I've shown off to potential fans the most since it came out. The initial hate was just about how the remakes werent all THAT different from the originals but if I hadnt heard those songs so many times before I'm sure I would have instantly loved it. Papaya Mango aside.

I gotta keep up with you guys! missing a day is missing 30+ posts!
But I think that an obvious way they are sports, variety, adult, educational related are the song titles. Also the stories told or innuendoes used throughout each respective album. That's pretty clear. |

I'm just listening to the album (got it saturday and had no time... :/), but I'll listen once more in the evening and then give a full statement but as far as I've listened now, I think this is gonna be my album for this year's summer.

her recent releases aren't perfect (and i use this word loosely, YES VARIETY I AM LOOKING AT YOU) but i like how she retain her quirks and manage to come out with something that makes me go holy shit ringo also, tokyo jihen trying post-rock in kimaru? fuck me. :'D |

Sweet Spot makes me wish I was deaf. It's like that stain in the carpet that you don't clean. Instead you hide it by putting something nice on top of it (Senkou Shoujo and Kimaru is this case). Yet the beginning of Ikiru might be the worst thing I've ever listened to. Why wasn't the whole album given the same care as Kimaru? This song is so far and above everything else on the album. It's like some SP Mellon Collie goodness tacked on to an otherwise mediocre album.
My favorite tracks: Kimaru Season Sayonara (by far the best tone Uki's ever had) Noriki Noudouteki Sanpunkan There are some nice parts in some of the other songs, but the overall quality is barely better than Variety if at all.

Eventually I'll try to do a track-by-track thing, but I agree with Maou that this album isn't much different from Variety in terms of quality. I like Variety, so that's fine, but I'm surprised that the consensus is that this is clearly a step up (well, at least there is no out-and-out dud like "Fukushuu.")
I also agree that Uki has a great tone on "Season Sayonara." Based on the video someone posted...it looks like he's using a 12-string on that song!! He seems to use it on a few other tracks too. This is something new, right? If "FOUL," "FAIR" (sorry Uki!), Denpa Tsuushin (shit chorus, dumb modern synths, "supersonic"), and "Senkou Shoujo" (I already replaced "Fukushuu" with this) were replaced with more substantial songs, I'd think this was a great album. Actually, I think the "Noudouteki Sanpunkan" b-side is excellent. I think it works well in place of "FOUL" (which I don't hate...but I'm so tired of the megaphone vocals). So I'm hoping for another good b-side I can use to strengthen the album.

The difference in opinion with this album is quite wide, surprise surprise (in and out of EMF). Sayonara Season, Noriki and Senkou Shoujo are the definition of 'insubstantial' to me.
The album should really have been made up of 12 Kimarus (And one Zettai Zetsumei). That's what made SR great after all...pulling out the stops for every single track. I wonder how the Japanese fans have received it. |

I get people's expectations for Ringo are high, based on their feelings towards earlier periods in her work and our attachment to her music, you know, the taller you are the harder you fall, blah blah, but it's statements like that which make me wonder what exactly Ringo did to you and your family that is so personal. regarding the chorus of denpa tsuuhin, its a mix of words ending with the same parts which are repeated in pairs. interactive hyperactive, super sonic hyper sonic, multi-access, direct access, local calling, direct calling, etc, and the entire song uses technology as an expression for relationships with people. the album as a whole has a lot of lyrical content concerning the modern state of technology in Japan (I'm looking at you Noriki), and on a whole I think this is a really awesome subject for her to writing about as its something she hasn't done yet. We've had women's issues, now its time for Ringo to teach the japanese high school girls to shut off their keitai and actually go live a bit. In the age of Twitter, I find this a really potent message, so good for Ringo. |
