Rouge no Dengon

So we watched Kiki's Delivery Service in my Japanese class, and I recognized the singer of the opening song right away! A true J-Pop classic.

I normally don't like to compare non-Western artists and Western artists (like "Ayumi is the Japanese Madonna"), but I think Yuming reminds me a lot of Carole King. They both have voices that are huskier than their contemporaries, they both started out as songwriters and eventually became singers, and they are both well known for an upbeat piano-based style of pop music.

Has anyone noticed that most (I didn't say ALL) Ghibli movies suffer terribly from pacing issues or am I just impatient?

Currently listening to: Yapoos.

Alot of them suffer from looooong second half Act 2s. Maybe this is an asian cinema thing though.

I don't know for sure. A lot of them are feel VERY long, even if they are only 2hours long.
But for Laputa, which I'm watching right now, it goes from having an exciting chase scene to three people talking in a tunnel. It's like a record scratching. So, maybe.
The earlier ones did, but I don't think the newer ones do.

But, from what I know about you, you could just be impatient too.

Not even comparable to the pacing issues that some other anime films have. Watch the works of Makoto Shinkai, for example: his latest film, Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo (a love letter to Ghibli) suffers from an unbearably slow first half and an unbearably uneven second half.

While I'm at it:

A while ago I heard the song "Aberdeen" by Cage the Elephant and really dug it.

This morning I looked it up on youtube and found the video for it. Totally 90's claymation and tone right down to the excruciatingly depressing ending.

The video ruined my morning because it was so sad and now I don't even want to listen to the song. =(

Lots of anime, not just Ghibli, take time to show their hand. Like, halfway through you'll be introduced to a major new character or situation or setting that you understand has been carefully designed to be there but doesn't quite follow the Hollywood structure of establishing everything in the first act and developing those things in the second act. The third act sometimes feels like a second 2nd act, if that makes sense.
