Even larger big budget movies in countries like Japan are distributed in a staggered "road show" format, meaning they travel around from theatre to theatre doing business. Drag Me to Hell was enjoyable, but I'm not sure I'd consider that horror. Did you check out the My Bloody Valentine 3-D? That was the last mainstream horror flick (remake, even) I enjoyed.

The remake of Friday the 13th suuuucked. I subscribe to Netflix so I watch all sorts of really low budget (sometimes shitty), B, C, D, even E horror movies. There have been some really interesting independent movies in the last year or so. Check out the REC (forget Quarantine, the US remake) and Splinter, those were both pretty interesting. Oooh and I also enjoyed The Last Winter, which is another independent atmopsheric horror film about nature.
My Bloody Valentine 3D was pretty good. Seeing it with the 3D glasses for me was half the enjoyment right there. It was awesome seeing all the different effects popping out though I'm not sure I would have enjoyed it as much if it weren't for that. It was a pretty standard slasher flick.

And yes, the Friday remake sucked HARD. The first 15 minutes were great and then the rest of the movie was a complete mess. Not only did Jason seem to be out-of-character since he enjoyed torturing and playing with his victims but the pacing was awful. Most of the most brutal kills were at the beginning of the movie and by the end there was nothing to surprise me anymore. By the time Jason whittles it down to the remaining people, it's a snorefest. At least Jason X knew it was stupid and just had fun with it. Me and my friend always joke about that "perfect nipple placement" line too. That was pretty hilarious.

As bad as the Friday remake was though, it still doesn't touch Jason Takes Manhattan. That is, hands down, one of the most godawful horror movies I have ever seen. Not only does it seem to be filmed on a budget of 10 dollars but all of the characters are terrible. You would think that seeing Jason kill them would be satisfying but it even manages to screw that up somehow. I kept hoping there would be a "New York, New York" segment with Jason singing in a tux to save it but that moment never came. Oh, and he doesn't take Manhattan in case you were wondering.

I'll have to check out those horror movies you mentioned. Those sound pretty promising.

I recently saw Ice Age 3D (don't ask) Surprised about the glasses as I thought it would be the green & red things but they were just standard semi-tinted shades. You could wear them about as sunglasses.

I was always a bit scared of 3D effects, so watching something like Valentine in 3D is a nogo for me.
Maybe if it's not used as a "Boooo!" effect, but an artistic way like in a previous 2D movie like Star Wars.

I actually think the most impressive aspects of the digital 3D are the subtle ones. The added depth of field and things like that, rather than objects blatantly popping out. It just feels 3D, even without a pickaxe obnoxiously sticking in your eye. Toy Story 1 and 2 are being released in 3D this year (both movies with one ticket) and James Cameron's Avatar should be the perfect poster child for 3D as a tool used to expand the movie in new artistic ways and not just for cheap thrills, if it's as good as he says it is. If you haven't seen a movie in 3D yet, make sure you catch Avatar in 3D. I'll probably go see The Final Destination too for some cheap popcorn thrills. I think that is the perfect horror movie to be created around 3D pop-outs.

unlike most movies released, which are shot and formatted for 3D later, My Bloody Valentine was entirely filmed on special equipment specifically for 3D, which are huge and bulky/heavy.

to see it in the theatre was insane, it rose above the 3D really. there was only one scene where it was really obviously intended to freak you out with the 3D is a kind of cliche way (where you get a gun pointed right at you), but for the most part the 3D is done really nicely, it was amazing in the theatre.

also, Jensen Ackles is the man. I didn't like Friday the 13th cuz the locations SUCKED. What ever happened to Camp Crystal Lake? They occassionally go there but for the most part it is a traditional slasher inside some rich prick's house. I hate horror movies with no atmosphere. An abandoned summer camp is SO MUCH more atmospheric.

I don't think it was a remake as much as reboot though, so the changes to Jason's character didn't phase me that much. I'm not sure how I feel about Nightmare knowing what happened with this.

I'm looking forward to Orphan, it looks fucked up. I read the spoiler for the ending and there is NO WAY you can guess it unless your really really really amazingly fucked up and insightful, it is going to make the movie quite interesting to watch.

Oh, and Grace. that looks hardcore.

Final Destination and Avatar are being filmed with 3D in mind also. I think there were a few more cliché 3D moments such as a pickaxe being thrown at the screen and an eye popping out of the screen. The gun part was actually the best in-your-face 3D moment, I thought. But as I said, the subtle effects impressed me much more. Like early on when the camera is behind a mesh fence and usually the camera would focus on the fence and then the people behind it, but in this you could do it yourself -- look at the fence or look through it, and if you look through it it actually looks like the stuff past the fence is further away. It gives depth rather than have the fence pop out of the screen making it look, when it works well, like you're looking into the actual scene. The only problem I can see with this is a movie like Avatar, I want to see the directors vision. What he intended the scene to look like. It might be a bit much having to look around a scene and it might take away from the artists vision somewhat if the viewer controls what to look at and focus on, but I'll just assume Cameron has obviously thought about this and his total hyping of his 3D (on his totally new state of the art cameras) pays off.

Yeah, Orphan looks really interesting. I've been wanting to see that. And I do agree with you on the atmosphere thing. Camp Crystal Lake is a great location. The original Friday the 13th was a great movie because it utilized that atmosphere so well. Location is crucial when it comes to good horror. I didn't really think about it but now that you mention it that was a big problem with the new one. It might as well be anywhere since the lake location is barely used.

I didn't go to see Valentine, because I expected cheap thrills. I don't expect that at all for Avatar, so yes, I definintely WON'T miss that.

"cloudy" darkness and solar eclipse are totally different, so you should be able to tell
