Utada already tried unique music. It's called Exodus and it's her best album. It also TANKED. (for a variety of reasons)

And I really, sincerely doubt that Namie Amuro has intentions to break into the US market. All of her songs (well, the singles that I listened too) do sound western, but they also lack the bite that today's Top 40 radio has. They need to be clubby-ier.

I don't think any Japanese artist today could break into the mainstream (Top 40) Western market. Maybe 2NE1, but they are South Korean.

As if Exodus is remotely as powerful as Deep River... also her most personal work.

Japanese metal seems to be doing alright. Boris is definitely a strong player in the West.

Okay fine, Exodus is second best, after Deep River. Deep River is more emotionally powerful but Exodus is more sonically experimental.

That being said, Matan-San was talking about Namie Amuro aiming for the western market, but I highly doubt that is what they were going for with the English lyrics- I think they were mainly aiming for some kind of aesthetic- what that is I don't exactly know. On top of that, FEEL does not have an international/US release like Exodus or This is the One (well, to my knowledge anyway- and no, Taiwan versions do not count, every AVEX artist has those :-p). The "western" dance music feel you get I won't deny- but it's oh so much better done than the majority of EDM I've heard in a long time, especially from Japan and most definitely from AVEX.

My R.E.M. journey has taken a weird late 70's punk sidequest.
It's not hard to see why. I made it to Document and revisited Murmur. Obviously I wanted to check out Wire's Pink Flag. I grooved on that, and then hit the next logical /mu/-essential - Gang of Four's Entertainment! After being thoroughly impressed I somehow finally made the jump into Trans-Europa Express and loved every minute of it.

I don't see how anyone can say Bowie's Low is better.

So, theneedledrop rated Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's latest album an 8 out of 10, does this mean the elitists can now take Jpop seriously?

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is J-Pop designed for pretentious music critics: it's not actually any good, and they think the visceral color explosion and random imagery is a marker of depth. They are reading it as a parody of J-Pop when it really is just normal J-Pop.

Shire theme: Single best motif composed for any major motion picture, in my opnion.

Like, every example of the shire motif from LOTR.
