The Most Curious Thing raises the standards of what a community can offer
Default Favorite holiday albums?

Because it's December already. Why not?

I have to say Harry Connick's first Christmas album, When my Heart Finds Christmas. It goes so many places in 50 minutes, and it has one of the few New Years' "bonus" tracks I've heard that doesn't sound shoehorned.

Failing that, I'd say the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack, because Vince Guaraldi is simply an amazing pianist-songwriter. "Skating" and "Christmas is Coming" are sublime.

Any Zooey Deschanel fans listened to A Very She & Him Christmas?

Tori Amos - Midwinter Graces

Favorite by default, because it's the only holiday album I own.

Aimee Mann's Christmas album is really quite amazing. It has that old kind of nostalgic bittersweet feeling down...she also has some really upbeat stuff on there, but my favorite track is of course the depressing one hahaha. check it out if you can, I actually listen to it quite often, it surpasses its "holiday album" label to just be good music.

also: midwinter graces <3 you seriously gotta admire how crazy ambitious that project was. I don't even know how she managed it (and then did it again a year later on Night of Hunters). I think my favorite part is how seasonal the album is, it feels so festive, but its almost entirely nondenominational and the most overtly religious songs are pretty much pagan.

if you want good holiday music you can't do better than what tori did here. it takes a genius to be able to delve back through hundreds of years of history to resurrect dead carols with modern classical undertones...

Oh mannn... this is gonna be my jam. I'm getting super into gathering a collection of Christmas music this year, and some of these recs sound great. Definitely gonna check them out.

First of all, who knew Lady Gaga (early in her career) recorded a Christmas song? I DID NOT. It's hilarious.

Lady Gaga - Christmas Tree

Second, this is my 2011 favorite Christmas song. I never even knew this song existed! It is SO fun. The version I like (the one below) comes from the Ally McBeal Christmas soundtrack. Um... weird. I never watched that show. But it turns out it's actually... pretty good! (The soundtrack, that is.) AND it has a couple songs by Robert Downey Jr on it! Pretty amusing. Anyway, listen to the song below, you won't be disappointed.

Vonda Shepard - The Man with the Bag

I had also never listened to any Michael Bublé prior to this, but his Christmas album is really excellent. Amazing renditions of a lot of hard-to-top classics.

Amy Grant - Home for Christmas is one of THE best Christmas albums, and also my childhood.

For Ringo fans, Ella Fitzgerald Christmas songs are pretty amazing. You know Ringo's listened to many of them so that's cool. I think my favorite is the classic "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve."

I also just discovered the existence of Sailor Moon Christmas music (in Japanese). So that's hilarious. I also have a Cardcaptor Sakura Christmas album which is cute.

And then I round everything out with the Christmas/winter albums (or just songs) recorded by my favorite artists, including Bonnie Pink, Mai Hoshimura, Maaya Sakamoto, Enya, Loreena McKennitt, Sufjan Stevens, and Barenaked Ladies.

If you like indie rock/pop, there's the "Maybe This Christmas" series of compilations.
If you like lady singer-songwriters, there's "Hotel Cafe Presents Winter Songs."
I don't stand by every song in those compilations, but many are good and I like several of the featured artists.
