Oh, I thought of another recent example for the "repeating word/phrase = chorus" pet peeve. Rihanna's latest song (I'm not a fan, but I listen to the radio). The chorus is just "We fell in love in a hopeless place" four times over. UGH!! So boring!

Rihanna is the QUEEN of songs with nothing but a word, phrase, or sound repeated over and over. They're hook songs and nothing more.
"Umbrella ella-ella-ella eh-eh..." "Take it Take it Baby Baby, Take it Take it Love Me Love me" "Na na na. Come on. Na na na. Come on. Na na na na na." "Oh na na What's my name Oh na na What's my name" |

I have one!
When Japanese artists start "improvising" in English songs and make it obvious that they have no idea what they are singing about. An example: Arisaka Mika singing Amazing Grace. After the line "that saved a wretch like me" she goes "oh just like meeeee". I wonder who was saved instead of her. Similarly, I hate the gestures that are currently popular among Japanese divas. Like when you sing the word "one" (hitotsu/hitori/etc) in whatever context, you show one finger. Or when you sing the word "heart", you put your palm to your chest. Doesn't matter if the word has the most minor meaning among all the words in the stanza. A phrase like "one night when the moon was blah-blah-blah" requires a "one" gesture. |
