Default Black orpheus... a tiny history lesson

This is one of my favorite shiina songs and I recently made a list different versions of the song for a friend of mine, seeing as he never heard the original, I never heard it either so I learned and heard a lot. Now no one here may wish to partake, but I thought I would at least extend the invitation.

To mods, not sure if this topic would go here... but it is based around a song shiina sung.

Anyways I'll just copy and paste my letter to him, I hp[e at least one person can enjoy this
Remember that shiina song Black Orpheus, remember how neither of us had heard the original... I got some links

LMFAO, in this big ass internet, I refuse to believe no one has this song by shiina available to be streamed... I searched for a while and could not find it, so I uploaded this myself...
Shiina's pwntastic version! (its like bossa and lounge and something else mixed all together, killer version)

Here is the original from the movie... I wish I could sing like that... (I actually put this in about last, even though its second on the list

F-ing right wii shiina. If this song was ever elevator music... this is it, the vibraphone tends to do that... Elevator or wii channel music, nothing else, lol

This is straight latin jazz here (bossa being that section), just how I like it 3 pieces and jammin.

Oh this one is good another vocalist... Closest I've heard to a ringo level vocals, but that band is bad, serious playing going on in the background. Another highly recommended clip.

Here is a video with english translation of the portugese / french lyrics.
Manhã de Carnaval with Updated English Lyrics (sings in english)

I frickin love you youtube, the plot thickens once again, the english version of the song is called "A Day in the Life of a Fool". It should be noted that this version's lyrics' don't have the same meaning as the original , meaning its not a true translation of the song, above clip claims to be.

Another highly reccommended clip. This dude sounds like good ole blue eyes (frank sinatra) I really like the backing mnusic, very very nice, a jazz pop feel... love it so much!

If black opheus was on HF, it might sound like this... more polished, but similar, I like this version. They are greek... mediterranean / eastern european women can get it....

Just in case you wanted to know, I listened to EVERY song posted on here and others that weren't good enough. I had the time of my life, and learned a lot. Man this was excellent, that song is just as awesome to me after hearing it so much... Well I do not expect you to listen to every song, but... it would be great if you listened to the recommended ones. I'll probably end up singing this song... such a great one, thanks shiina for being a bad ass. Hey this took me so much time, its seriously 6am... I need to go to bed... Feel free to ignore most of the links...

I love this version, tori amos' carnival. the best part is the electro breakdown freakout towards the end around three minutes in

Thanks for the links, jigen. This has always been one of my favorite Shiina songs as well. The Tori Amos version is interesting, but sort of sounds like it was recorded in a subaquatic cavern. Perhaps it will grow on me.

its mostly the youtube video, I have the actual song and it sounds better, but if your not into Tori I suppose the overall effect on the song might be described that way. it is definitely very trippy, she probably heard the song while on opium and that influenced her production. the period during this song was produced a lot of her music had a very aquatic submerged feeling to it. I like the effect, it really sucks you in and gives you a feeling like your high.

Oh oh, To Venus and Back, the forgotten gem...
I think Tori's is better than Ringo's, because she really made the song her own like she does so often, Ringo's comes as a close second, but I find Tori's version even more creative. I can't say I love the effect because I absolutely adore it, she should definitely do more electronica.
Also, I guess it should be best heard on opium as well

yesss merman, her covers really alter the original core essence of a song and sometimes it takes a while before I appreciate them. It took me forever to get into Strange Little Girls but Heart of Gold is probably one of my top Tori songs ever now. Its sooooo different than Neil Young's original version. Its like she took the concept and wrenched it free of its frame and reinvisioned it entirely from a female perspective.

heart of gold

OMG, that's my favorite on the whole album. I loved it since the first listen and I NEVER understood why it's so widely hated and bashed on, because it's one of the most interesting covers she's ever put out... and you've basically put it right. I've read one review where they described the song as her washing the dirt of a (bad man I think) in a shower, but the sponge is made of iron, or something, and that's pretty much how I feel about it
Not to spam this thread though, I will get back on AIM soon, I just tend to not catch you whenever I log on

that is a good comparison. it grated my ears for a while. I think the only tori song I still love as much now as I did on the first listen was Siren. Oh man. I'm just waiting for Angela Aki to release a Tori cover, I know she probably doesn't have the balls but still.

andyes, I miss you on AIM ;-; since I moved to hawaii our time difference has changed. what is the time difference? we have to set a time to meet haha.

oh and back on topic

shiina's version of the song sounds *JUST LIKE* sounan. oh man version four, right here after hime hiyori nuuuuhhhrrr.
