Very recommended even for those who doesn't like ska.
Hear hear. TSPO is one of those bands that, like other ska "fusion" bands (Mano Negra etc.), does not fall back to monotomy. Listen to Mayonaka ha Junketsu and you see what I mean. Their live concerts are definately recommendable, very energetic and with an great dramatic guitarist, a crazy keyboard player and a really awesome contrasax (if that's what you call it).

I like Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra the most when they're not so heavily samba-influenced in style, and they definitely departed from that influence when they released Wild Peace. I like Answer a lot though (it has epics like Stroke of Fate - and the bonus DVD includes more than just PVs). Answer was the first album of theirs that I ever bought, and I still haven't got around to buying any of their earlier works.

The guest vocalists are pretty hit & miss for me. Aside from Shiina Ringo (writing her own music - so it was more like Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra were the guests), I've only heard two guest vocalists I've actually liked, and the rest have sucked. As for dedicated vocalists, Rui Sugimura was a mistake, and I'm grateful he didn't last longer in the band than he did.

How can you compare this to Volksmusik or "schlager" as we call it here??

Mano Negra - Mala Vida

Ska is so much more creative and skillfull, compared to that awful Volksmusik. I know there are bound to be some Ska bands that play boring monotonous tunes, but there are also a lot of great Ska bands out there that are brilliant, like the above. I vote for Ska!

Or this:

Sublime - Date Rape

I say it's 2-0 for Ska
