Reality check: Out of hundreds of thousands of albums sold on Japan (both domestic and international) in 2005, Kyouiku was ranked at #33 in highest record sales.

Tokyo Jihen sells very well. There are virtually very few bands that can consistently sell like this. Sale numbers are down because CD sales in Japan in general has gone down. There are NO artists that will sell what they made 5 years ago now. Tokyo Jihen isn't the most popular artist in Japan right now, but unlike other artists, they can continue to release what they wish, and still have a very comfortable fanbase to support them; few artists have that kind of freedom. Sadly, many artists that were popular now barely scrape the 5,000 level in singles. And inversely, artists that are trying to break into the industry end up failing (Hirama Mikio's last album sold around 700 copies).

Check out the first week sales for OSCA. I think #2 is pretty respectable. Do not compare sales to what Shiina / Jihen released years ago. Those numbers are important for trending information, but they must be considered in the time they were in.

Damn i was so close.

Kyoiku was disappointing cause she went from top 10 to 33. it sold like 300,000 first week, those are great numbers but it was a step down. Cd sales are down all over the world, but in terms of overall ranking she has regressed.
Not doubting th3 profit making power of shiina, she wouldn't be going on a tour if she wasn't making money,
It just hurts me knowing Shiina isn't making as much as she should be making.

ROFL, yes, because artists should make bajillions of dollars to get even more plastic surgery. I'm not saying Ringo is one of those idols, but seriously, when the world is starving of hunger and people go homeless scraping up pennies to pay for loans for school, does an artist like Ringo really need more money than what she has? She has comfortability, a large fan base, popularity, and the ability to do musically and personally *whatever* she wants. At this point she could just retire and never make a record again, drop into the backlight.

I get your point, but I think it is ludicrous to assume Ringo isn't making as much as she should be. She is so fucking rich you have no idea.

(on a random note, Japan publishes surveys of income and celebrities are included, oddly enough, and about two years ago Ringo was noted as having one of the highest incomes located in her area of residence. So unless she lives in middle of nowhere, you can count on her sitting in a huge house surrounding by bling)

Sure Ringo and those guys are still artists but in a way I somehow picture them alot more like 社会人, that is "working members of society" which means they probably go to work everyday and work hard and do overtime and go home late, eat a cup ramen in front of the tv and fall asleep... and the same story the next day. No breaks, no vacations, no time off, no Sat/Sundays. Japan is a hard working society. Not like the lame country I'm representing. Ringo is probably just working just as hard as everyone else and has hardly any glamorous life, even though she could.

So once again Tokyo Jihen proves that they have a very strong supportive fanbase. Artists that release singles this close to a release never usually sell over 15k, because people tend to just wait until the album drops to hear the song. Take Angela Aki for example, her latest single before her new album releases only sold 8k in the first week. Even the mega pop idol Amuro Namie's single before her album's release (Funky Town) sold 34k in its first week (usually much higher). This proves that Tokyo Jihen is still far from dead.
