I wouldn't say that apart from stem either. However, the HF versions do work better stand alone if you make a playlist up. Whether this is intended or not, it could be one reason a singles-person (rather than an album person) could consider HF over KZK. Crazy as it sounds.

But whatever, I am also one to think the HF ver of yume no ato pwns the original too. Gamble depends on the mood.

I'm not being a bully, just saying that of the hundred and forty versions of Kuki/Stem we've gotten over the years, saying that the one that is essentially the first version just recorded a few years later is the best one is uproarious.

EDIT: Seriously, as bad as Variety is, and other awful Shiina/Jihen things, Heisei Fuuzoku is the album I wish was never made.
It is KZK Kidz Bop version.

That makes me wonder, what do the kidz listen to in Japan (as in, imagine what Pitchfork Japan version would have on it)?

Probably VK

EDIT: Man, I feel like listening to HF now :-p

I don't really get it, Jihad.

From what I understand, you view HF as a lazy cash-in that simply re-uses old arrangements to old songs that never needed to be re-arranged anyways.

But how do you feel Yattsuke Shigoto, or La Salle de Bain, or Ringo no Uta, or any of the other examples of Shiina re-working her old songs. Is it always bad?

I don't understand why you can't just appreciate the merits of the HF songs as more-commercial remakes.

The others are fine. Great, in some instances. (well, okay no worse than good.) But you used the perfect words to describe why I particularly dislike HF. More commercial remakes.

Its like if you took Pulp Fiction, put it in chronological order, turned Vince and Jules into policemen, cut Bruce Willis out, turned the drugs into Lucky Charms, and put a bible in the briefcase. More people may feel okay watching it, but when anyone says it is better than the original, you can't help but shake your head in dismay.

KZK was amazing, Yokushitsu was great. Unless theres some brand new idea to skew and add to the song (like La Salle de Bain) there's no reason to trot them back out with years old stage arrangements.

And don't tell me about the circumstances around HF. I get it, they were in a pinch and had to put out something. I get it, I understand. That doesn't help me like it or give it a pass.

Stem is boring, Meisai is souless, Poltergeist is a waste of time, Yokushitsu should be turning in its well trampled grave, and Papaya Mango brings all the grandmas to the yard. Any other remake (besides Gamble) I may have missed can be applied above too.

The new songs + Gamble are fine. They all are fine ideas with care in production and attention to detail. I get that they had to pad it out to make a full length record. But that is what it all is, padding. Unchallenging, uninteresting padding.

Did you feel this way about these specific Baishou arrangements even before HF? I'm just curious.

I didn't particularly like BX. I tuned out for most of it except Okonomide and Meisai. Kabuki Cho was especially awful.

However, at the time it seemed like a novel way of translating the stage unfriendly songs of KZK. Then EM happened.

While I agree that HF Kuki is better than KSK Kuki, I can't agree on Yume no Ato. The original is perfect. Love Kameda's choir phrasing in the song.

No. Just No.

Also, HF Kuki/stem better than KSK stem? No. Just No. I will be the first to admit HOW MUCH I LOVE HF because I do, but HF Kuki is my absolute least favorite version of Kuki/stem ever. EVER OF ALL TIME.

Edit: Also x2, I voted in this poll 5 million years ago with "Shouso Strip." It contains too many of my least favorite Ringo songs, and the hype for Honnou + my utter disappointment when I actually heard it makes me want to curl up and die. NOT A BAD SONG PER SE, but it wasn't what I was expecting at all.
