I usually don't tag the genre part. Some of the stuff I listen to is just too hard to properly tag. If it means anything, iTunes has the tag "Alternative and Punk" for most Ringo stuff (including Mayonaka) when you play the cd.

But iTunes grabs that from the Gracenote CDDB thing right? So maybe that's what Toshiba EMI labels her music as.

jpopsuki olololol

If you feel like a sucker for Swedish music, you should check out http://itsatrap.com/
That guy is not Swedish (omg omg american!) but insanely good at knowing everything about the Swedish music scene. I'd say he's nuts. I haven't visited his page in quite some years though, but he's really in there...

Other than that, I didn't really use last.fm that much even though it sure has its uses, it just points to bands I "ought to check out", but I've mostly already been acquainted to those and have them tagged "Fail" in my internal id3 tagging mechanism.

Quite a few times I've downloaded stuff like "my compilation of the top 10 <genre>" or something like that. I find a song I like, then try to find out more about the artist behind that one.

Then recently also randomly through youtube, myspace... and random live houses visits.

I don't tag genres either but if I was going to tag I'd go off each individual cd... or just do a general jazz tag on them all. Jazz/Rock covers most of her stuff.

I'm fortunate enough (having played most of my life, gone to a music school, and now working as a musician) to have many amazing musicians as friends. Musician friends must never be overlooked as a valuable asset in finding good new music.

My second advice for finding good new music is to research the artists you like. Especially if it's in a style you're not super familiar with. The research can open the doors to hearing more names, and you can follow those names up and end up discovering something great, something overhyped, or something perfectly mediocre.

A fantastic blog for Japanese music you can't usually find is Hitoshizuku. This guy finds and recommends killer great stuff that seldom shows up on Oricon. I've grabbed almost everything he's posted and not deleted one album (and I delete what I don't listen to). He's also a big SR/TJ fan.

So is all the stuff he puts up available on cdjapan or they put links to test the files?

Also, this is a pretty cool blog that updates alot of stuff daily: http://mandarkzilla.blogspot.com/

Very very varied stuff.

Usually both. Sometimes there are even streamable samples.

Ditto. I also find songs I like on the radio, but the DJ always never says who it's by when a song I happen to like is over. =_= I've also used the last.fm radio to find out about Ringo and some other artists (but I can't remember who they are. >_<) I also find out about artists through collabos, e.g. m-flo. If the new artist sounds interesting, I ususally research him/her and check out his/her new releases. I think rarely I really like an artist that someone recommends me. o_o But, I think that's because my musical interests are so random. Soo, I find most of my favorite artists by chance, too.

I guess it'd be more useful for creating smart playlists in iTunes, but I prefer the one genre thing just because it looks neater, even though it gives almost next to no information about the style of the song, but hey, I already know them by heart.

(and I just went off-topic.)
Ditto!! @_@ I just label all her music as 'rock,' since I don't have many genres anyway. >_< Sometimes, I want to label each song in its own genre, but I suck at classifying genre and it's so time consuming.
