It does work very well as-is - that's the genius of it. And again, I have to give Ringo a lot of credit for that. But at a few points, one can almost hear how Ringo herself would sing it, and it's absolutely tantalizing. I think she would add a lot.

It's just that I really don't care about the vocals of these other artists. I think Rie Tomosaka claimed Tokai no Manner, and the enka woman (I'm sorry) arguably owns the songs SR wrote for her, even if I prefer SR's versions. Ichigo Ichie is its own thing. In every other case I just don't care.

Ishikawa's version of Anya no Shinjuudate was good, but I don't know that she does anything vocally that Ringo couldn't or wouldn't. She sounded great singing it in Expo 14...

The musical arrangements on Ishikawa's studio versions shit on Ringo's live versions though...

Now DG, you know I have a one-track mind...

It does seem like she learned how to write/pick songs that suit the person's voice. Her early giveaways to Puffy Amiyumi and Tokio sounded pretty bad because the singers couldn't keep up.

Hiyori Hime really sounds like a Puffy song though...

Really? Between Hiyori Hime and Shuen no Onna I'd say the latter is more quintessential Puffy since it nods back to some of their earlier loungey, jazzy stuff.

I'd agree that Puffy's giveaways were hardly my favorites (it would be tough for them to keep up vocally...), but Ringo did a fine job suiting the arrangements to their voices.

I've always thought Hiyori Hime would fit really well on Spike. It just feels to me like Sumire, but with more of Puffy's signature two-crazy-girls vibe. Shuen no Onna is actually a good fit too, though.

It's not just that the arrangements suit their voices. Ringo somehow captured Puffy's essential...Puffy-ness...in those songs.

Favourite throwaway is still Oishii Kitesu.

And call it blasphemy, but I still like the Chiaki version the most
