OH, I thought we were talking about world-building with a ton of details. That's why I mentioned series with lots of details in the culture language and history of the world.

Sorry, I went back and realized I kind of quoted you out of context. My fault.

Fixed that for you.

To clarify my previous comments, my problem is that the clinch pin in every Rowling plot revolves around some newly-introduced MacGuffin.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MacGuffin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacGuffin

While not MacGuffins in the literal sense (usual), every HP book fabricates some virtually meaningless item or items to further the story. The first one is especially bad at this. Yes, we know what the Philosopher's Stone does and why we need to keep it away from that mean old wizard, but it's still just a chase for something that really has no bearing on the plot other than it is the plot. And every book does it in some form or another. I'm not saying dear old Jay Kay (not the vocalist from Jamiroquai) doesn't at least find inventive ways to implement all these artifacts, it's just that it gets really, really old. And the last book just blows it all out of proportion by introducing not one, but ten objects that the protagonists have to capture (though they did get a few in previous installments - but it doesn't matter from a literary standpoint since they didn't know it until the 7th book/last pages of the sixth). It's like goddamned Pokemon.

To her credit though, Harry Potter definitely is more about the ride getting there than the actual storyline, which she designed admirably.

I understand what you're saying, when I re-read the last book, I kinda went "Well, this is a little aimless, they're just going around searching for the Horcruxes and then destroying them". Also, some of these things (Like the stone, or the Time Turner) never show up again or are even mentioned. And the last book was really, really busy.

But also, how is the treatment of the magical objects in the books any different than, say, the One Ring in Tolkien books?

I don't really know. Don't get me wrong, I don't worship these books. They do have issues, I just don't think the idea that a book about magic revolving around made-up magical objects is such a bad thing.

I watched The King's Speech yesterday.
It was a good movie.

my thoughts

I have been envious of casual way to portray British royal family and this time again.

/SpoilerEdward VIII reminds me of Prince Charles.
So why is he still crown prince?

The music used the scene of George VI's speech to declare war against Germany was German music.
I initially thought it's result of Europe integration not to be feeling of wrongness.
Then re-thought it might be result of political consideration.

Kings Speech made me want to gag myself. LOTR made me want to slit my wrists.

Deathly Hallows part 2, pretty good though.

/knows a thing or two about movie stuff before any of the above newbs (excepting the honorable EmilScherbe of course) thinks about chiming in on this.

Really? We're upset because of Macguffins? Come now.

lol this shitty post is #4000

I've seen Synecdoche, New York recently. While watching the film is was constantly stunned unable to know wether to like it or not, or even to take it seriously or not. And the end I was so confused about life and everything that I wondered what just happened, and then came the incredibly beautiful credit song and suddenly everything made total sense.
Intense, hard movie. I'll definitely watch it again.
