Heisei Fuuzoku had symmetry, especially in the official English translation
1. Gamble 13. Memory (Kono Yo no Kagiri) 2. Stem 12. Scar (Yume no Ato) 3. Confusion 11. Courtesan 4. "Firstlove” Singer 10. “Temporary” Virgin 5. Papaya Mango 9. Poltergeists 6. Consciously 8. Camouflage 7. Bathroom @deadgrandma But uniformity is not the same thing as symmetry. The tracklisting is uniform, not symmetrical, which is not the same thing. You say that you see that all the songs titles are the same ("backwards and forwards"), and that makes it symmetrical, but that's not symmetry, that's uniformity. if you define j-pop as japanese popular music, well then yes, Ringo would be j-pop, considering her sales. that being said, does she deserve the j-pop label, alongside artists like Perfume, Koda Kumi, Ayumi Hamasaki, and Utada Hikaru? Probably not, her music is more progressive rock and experimental, but then again, isn't Perfume, Ayumi, Utada, and I hate to say it, even Koda Kumi (from time to time) experimenting with genre-blending? On a whole, the pop music scene in japan tends to be miles above what it is here in the states. The only exception would be the idols IMO.
Ringo has always hated labels so the statement doesn't surprise me. Here's hoping it will piss her off to the point of another Identity of Tsumi to Batsu |

"Experimenting with genre-blending"
No. Just because a pop singer can sing an occasional pop song with rock influences doesn't make them a rock singer. Utada and Shiina are on such a completely different level as all the other crappy pop idols in Japan. I hate it whenever people compare them. You have no idea how many times a female singer comes out with something minisculely influenced by R&B and is somehow proclaimed "THE NEXT UTADA HIKARU". |

Interesting how uptight people get when they're slammed with the 'P' word

You mean pop? Utada is pop. She does New Wave Pop, but it's still pop. Just because an artist is pop doesn't mean they can't make artistic music. Comparing Utada to Hamasaki Ayumi is like comparing Kate Bush to Madonna.

Ok but comparing Utada to Kate Bush is like comparing Rebecca Black to Shiina Ringo

You're saying Utada makes catchier songs than Kate Bush these days? Sounds about right.

wow someone hit a nerve
would it piss you off to say that Ayu IS experimental and IS comparable to Ringo and Utada because they defined their own genre's in their time and paved the path for many that followed?. Much of what Ayu did in the start of her career was meld styles such as house/reggae/electronica into modern pop conventions and make it mainstream. How is that not experimental? And considering she wrote almost all of her music through most of her career (especially the start), how does that not make her an artist? just because you don't like that style of music doesn't mean there isn't artistic merit to it. With Ringo singing songs written by Uki and Izawa, there really isn't much difference besides the quality of the composition and personal preference in music. I do think Ringo is much more talented than Ayu, but I think your statements sound the kind of pissy that comes from a closet-fan. ADMIT YOUR DEEP DESIRES TO LISTEN TO AYU AND BE FREED OF THE CLOSET TURTLE FU >.> Last edited by kuro_neko : 2011.06.02 at 04:53 PM. |
