I didn't play any of the singles more than a few times, so these all seem new to me. And oddly enough, I really only find myself listening to the singles. "Irohanihoheto" and "Jiyuu e Michizure" are my favorites by a long shot. "NIPPON" would be up there too, but the song just falls apart for me at the end of the bridge.
The only album tracks I can stomach are "JL005" (Christ, am I the only one who hears "Irokoizata" in this??) and "Chin Chin Pui Pui" (doesn't even try to not be "Mittei Monogatari" 2.0). I won't even go near those first two and the fourth one. If I fiddle around with the track order and take out most of the album tracks, it's just a so-so EP. Definitely agree that these songs really don't mesh well together, unlike other "throw in ALL the singles" albums like LOVEppears or HEART STATION. Also it's probably all that K-pop killing my brain cells, but I LOVE the dopey, new "Kodoku no Akatsuki." |

Gotta say those are some very strange opinions. I won't pretend I understand them.

That aside, I can't immediately hear the connection between it and JL005. But I can half-understand your gripe with Chichinpuipui since it can feel like the MM-style songs in a related-but-different style, so if your problem with JL005-izata is related then maybe. It's still a huge leap though, not to mention it doesn't change the fact that JL005 is still better by a mile (or less for those who like Irokoizata). JL005 and Irokoizata are so completely different in terms of writing, melody, arrangement I'm not sure Ban here is talking about the right songs...
Chinchinpui reminds me more of Expo version of Omatsuri sawagi if anything. |

This album is really like "look how far I've gone" Kind of album. there are so many layering sounds that I've heard that are so signature to ringo in her past albums. And I feel like every single song is shedding a bit of each point in time she's learned something new. Although it isn't an album that's pretty cohesive and themed. As always it doesn't lack in depth which Ringo really has never had a problem achieving. I can definitely say embarrassingly so I was on the train giving the album a trial listen smiling about the tracks and the certain things that I'd expect from ringo and I heard J00l and I really felt a lot of things. It's seriously been a while since any song has moved me like that. And I'm not just being a cornball.

JL005 is obviously the standout, but I love her new delivery of an old track (track 1). It has that gnarly but sassy/seductive feel that made Ringo Convention's Ima an instant click with me. Those key changes feel harsh but I have Stockholm Syndrome (Shouso Strip) with Ringo anyway so it's okay.

The more I listen to this the more I end up liking it. It's one of the only albums I've put on my phone, so I've been listening to it pretty much every day when I ride the bus. It has a lot of energy, slows down at the right moments, picks back up again, then slows down for the final number. The last song isn't my favorite, but it's been growing on me. And dare I say I actually like the song with the autotune now?! I've been finding myself humming it in my head recently.

I'm not offended by the autotune in that one track because it's obviously for creative effect more than her NEEDING it. I think it works in the syrupy Disneyland context of the track ("Hay. Don't turn the other way." etc.)

And the similarities between "Chinchinpuipui" and "Mittei Monogatari" are solely in the chorus composition. The other parts are completely different, but choruses just sound really similar to me. |
