Agree 100%. At first I almost thought I was watching one of the old performances, but as she sang, I came to realize there was something more there, that hadn't been there before. I'd hesitate to call it wear...more like maturity.
Still got it.

This is a good example of what I'm talking about when I lay into the more recent peformances like Expo 14 etc. A lot of people still ask me/don't get what I see (well, don't see in them) that makes me think they're pretty awful...
Here you have Ringo delivering everything that made her great to start with- without the need for flashy backgrounds etc. Its a PEFORMANCE not a facade. There's no silly costumes or dancers to hide behind- and she gives it her absolute best. I don't feel ripped out of getting what I love about her here- it's all there, in plain sight and view. She sounds great. That level of intrigue that she has all but lost is there. She has brought subtle back. And the goosebumps have returned to me. This is definitely some hope. Pity it was just one song.

Seeing this performance, I'm beginning to come around to your way of thinking. I had kind of assumed that she was no longer capable of giving a performance like that. I don't think Expo 14 etc. were "awful" - there were a lot of good performances once you strip away some of the visual nonsense - but they were definitely not Ringo at her peak. This was. And since she is (now) obviously still capable of performing at that level, why *isn't* she?

Thanks for the streaming link DG!
I still disagree that the Expo'14 performances were awful. I think vocally, the entire show tune section on the back end, leading up to Arikitarina onna were on the same level as this one. The acoustics/sound production on the NHK performance is much much better though. |

I am continually amazed by how much difference this makes in the perceived quality of the performance.
