Ah, Passepied, the band I want to love but can only bring myself to feel 'they're alright' about. Musically, they're pretty great, So what could it be that's holding them back from really entering my heart?
I pondered over this for a long, long time, I checked out (and still check out) all releases by them. I see people raving about them, I've seen the Tokyo Jihen comparisons (I mean, just listen to とおりゃんせ, it's phase 2 out the wazoo) that come along. So I persist, hoping one day I will see the light.
I feel the main problem is their
total sleekness, there's no room for a sense of vulnerability. It's very much how I feel about
tricot- there's a sense of being over-technical without the fire and heart to back it up. The vocals are nice, but that's it. There's no real character to them. I wish there was. I hear enormous potential here- but alas, it falls to the wayside because of the inability to show a real sense of being
human.
But I'll keep trying. Like I said, I find them enjoyable enough. Their music does provide entertainment, I just can't seem to be able to get into them as much as I feel I should.
That said, the other band you mentioned, Gesu no Kiwami Otome (ゲスの極み乙女。) are infinitely better, easier to 'feel'. This song is fucking great, particularly the breakdown into piano/key solo:
Also, to note, an internet friend of mine said their live show was 'absolutely next level' (whatever they meant by that haha).
