The Japanese Oldies thread

OK
I really love City Pop, and some of you also do, but this is not the only good thing about old japanese music!
So it's about time for us to have a thread to discuss japanese music from the 80s, 70s and etc

and I still don't consider 90s music as old!!!!
:ph43r:
but that's my opinion, post whatever you like :P

Recently I've been listening to Monta & Brothers

My jam!

For 70's I really love this sort of stuff. It's so godly!

This is the only song that I know from this band, but I like it so much:

And a little bit of Yumi Arai:

Her first 3 albums are definitely in the top 20 of my list of best albums ever

Am I the only one that thinks all Hiromi Iwasaki's songs are good?

And Linda~

and she is still hot, even as a grandma

My knowledge in Japanese oldies is sorely lacking, but I have been listening to a lot of SUGAR BABE lately.
SB

I've also been listening to After Dinner, Mariah and of course EMF-favorite Jun Togawa.

If you like Sugar Babe then the next logical step is it's members solo stuff.

Taeko Ohnuki

Tatsuro Yamashita (Godly)

Eiichi Ohtaki (Sugar Babe producer/Happy End member also)

Lena-chan 2018.05.08 09:20 AM

I always think that After Dinner is from the 00s because it was around 2006/2007 when I first downloaded one of their albums, and the files didn't have any year of release, so I thought it was contemporary
Now about Mariah I never heard of them before, but it's so good! I loved it
And Bongo is right, the members' solo work are so gooood
these last years Tatsurou Yamashita became one of my top favorite artists

zordon 2018.05.08 12:56 PM

Mariya Takeuchi, she's actually married to Tatsuro Yamashita mentioned earlier.

So into Chakra and Mishio Ogawa lately. Less extreme Jun Togawa, but the sound is probably just as rich.

Lena-chan 2018.05.09 01:26 AM

Mariya Takeuchi

I swear I thought Iggy Azalea had sampled Yashiro Aki when I first heard this song:

Just for reference:

Also, let me show my love for the queen Akina:

I've always thought this song was from the anime Cat's Eye, because of the "mysterious girrrrl~" at the beginning

GS

G-Schmitt is pretty cool.

You could be right! They definitely sound similar. Not to veer too off-topic, but that song was written by Charli XCX — a self-professed fan of Jpop. She even collaborated with Yasutaka Nakata and Kyary on a song (admittedly, not a very good one).
CXCX

Lena-chan 2018.05.10 06:05 AM

I completely forgot about that connection Charlixcx has with j-pop O___O
I'm hating the new stuff Nakata is putting out =_= (by new I mean after 2010)

When I need energy in the morning I always listen to this song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aaZCk0zcBA
I don't know why it's such a morning song, maybe because I used to wake up early every sunday to watch an agriculture related tv show with my grandpa, and the soundtrack was very similar... brazilian classical sertanejo music
like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1tgx3dNTMI
(don't listen to the whole thing, it's huge)

Lena-chan 2018.05.24 05:06 AM

the early 70s was a good time for idol music

Go Hiromi when he was still good (when I listened to this song for the first time I thought it was a middle aged woman singing XD)

Great thread but no love for Anri? She's probably my favorite city pop artist. Timely!! is a godly album full of bangers. Especially the "summer tracks". And, of course, these tracks especially are sampled in future funk and vaporwave almost as much as George Clinton is sampled in early 90's G-funk. Great stuff.

Anri - Remember Summer Days

Anri - Windy Summer

I love her! But I've never dove into her discography
maybe now it's the time since all her stuff is on spotify
I wish someone made the master playlist of all city pop albums on spotify

I wish her stuff was on Apple Music. I get a free subscription to Apple Music bundled with my phone bill and it would be nice to have a non-YT Anri playlist to listen to. Seems like Spotify gets everything Apple Music has and more.

Anri - Goodbye Boogie Dance (Live)

Bassist is KILLING IT here. Would have loved to see this show live!
