What songs would you like Shiina Ringo to cover?

This came about when me and my sister were discussing which Japanese artists should cover which ABBA songs and I couldn't think of any good ones for SR. I'd like to hear your opinions on not just ABBA songs, lol, but anything you think would sound cool sung by her.
English, Japanese, or any other language. Doesn't have to be something you think she actually WOULD cover, just what you would like to hear.

I kind of would like to hear her sing Unwritten (Natasha Beddingfield) but I'm not quite sure how that would sound...

kuro_neko 2009.04.25 02:29 PM

moooore enka.

Sailor Fuku to Kikanjuu would be a perfect song for Ringo.

Oh, and a song like Music Fighter of Motto by JAM would be AWESOME for Ringo's vocals. YUKI and Ringo should do a side project together, it would be AWESSSOOOOMEEE, I'd probably cream my pants.

papilionidae 2009.04.26 08:27 AM

how about "you learn" by Alanis Morissette?

i think Ringo's vocal fits well into Alanis's songs :p

by the way, this is one of the "100 Questions for Ringo fans".

It was also one of the questions here.

clowezra 2009.04.26 10:18 AM

As much as I'd want her to cover something intricate and all, I'd really like to see her add a degree of intricacy to a typical pop-song. At least, I'd find it more interesting. Like, perhaps a Madonna song? Or maybe Girls Aloud? :P This isn't due to general preference-I'd seriously like to see her revolutionize the typical sort've pop tracks they release.

Osiris12345 2009.04.26 11:52 AM

I also nominate more enka. She kicks copious amounts of ass every time she does it. Shiina Ringo + Hibari Misora = some good stuff. Enka originals would be sweet too.

I still stand by the fact that hearing her do Queen would be great. My Melancholy Blues, White Queen, and Death on Two Legs would be badass.

papilionidae 2009.04.27 07:31 AM

enka would definitely be the best choice :p everyone wants her to sing enka. and i was sincerely hoping that "utite myoli ~ so no ni" would be a full enka-covering album (what a slim hope!)

i also like Ringo's "Tokyo no onna". the Peanuts' original version is quite plaintive, but Ringo sang it in a very rock erotic way, which suit her style perfectly. i found Ringo like these oldies very much :p

kuro_neko 2009.04.29 02:13 PM

she would NEVER do it but um I was just listening to Melanchonista by YUKI and it would be a PERFECT match for her image and vocals. it would definitely surprise a lot of people though.

Nebularus 2009.05.13 03:24 PM

"Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath, or "Pyramid Song" or "Knives Out" by Radiohead.

marcus314 2009.06.27 09:22 AM

Umm Tori Amo's "Silent All These Years?"

JonnoJ 2009.06.27 10:07 AM

Kaya - Rose Jail

This. With Neko orchestration. I'd love an album filled with stuff like that lol, though I'm not holding my breath...

Positron 2009.06.28 01:00 AM

I've only got two wishes for this:

1. Any song where her voice would not normally fit.
(ex. Gin and Juice by Snoop Dogg)

2. Any song that she wrote with/for other artists where she does not perform on the track.
(ex. the Rie Tomosaka, TOKIO, and Puffy songs)

A Michael Jackson song would be kinda fitting right now, too.

kuro_neko 2009.06.28 01:08 AM

omg, Ringo singing Tokai no Manner would be AMAZING, ditto for Hiyori Hime.

I'd like to see Ringo cover Motto by Judy and Mary, I'd cream my pants. Or perhaps Sailor Fuku to Kikanjuu (Sailor Uniform and Machine Gun).

Number one on my list is an official studio recording of UFO by Pink Lady. ;;orgasm;;

Scribble R 2009.06.28 02:19 AM

Tokai no Manners would be awesome.

NCORE 2009.06.28 03:14 AM

I don't think I'd really care about what she'll cover in the future
but here's something
(not Shinji)PGs Fleetwood mac

Or something like Time Table by Genesis :p

Cosmo! 2009.06.28 11:43 PM

I've been listening to the Beatles a lot lately and I wanna hear a cover of A Day in the Life.

using her "let's tear this shit up" approach to Yer Blues as an indication, the drama and ear-shattering explosion of sound halfway through A Day in the Life seems right up Ringo's crazy bitch alley.

a cover of This is Your Life by the Killers would be nice, too. she could even turn their Joy Ride into one of her breezy Caribbean romps.

the new Regina Spektor album is out, and their quirks have always drawn comparisons from me. Regina sings like a dolphin on Folding Chair, but how would Ringo up the ante?

I don't think there are many covers Ringo wouldn't be able to pull off well. *remembers I Won't Last a Day Without You and Tamanegi no Happy Song* well...there are a few.

Scribble R 2009.06.29 04:03 AM

Yeah. SR would butcher most Motown songs.

Orenji 2009.06.29 04:07 AM

Moloko - Sing It Back

That would me gorgeous...

makenshiww 2009.07.05 07:55 PM

Didnt wanna start a new thread so i thought I would just throw the question out here.

Ringo covered the song CREEP?

(why do i feel like I havent heard it....)

It's on the Kyoei Buranko & Manibiya Xstasy bootlegs (maybe others as well?)

I'll second Pyramid Song.

And a few more esoteric ideas, made by going through my iPod and jotting down random songs that sound like they'd be good for her:

Tony - Diamanda Galas
More Than Rain - Tom Waits
Less Of Me - Teenage Jesus & The Jerks
Friday Afternoon - Lydia Lunch
Shadow Of A Doubt - Sonic Youth
Swimming in Circles - Cop Shoot Cop
Funny Bird - Mercury Rev
Someone's In The Wolf - Queens Of The Stone Age
Helpless - Sugar
Shoot Out The Lights or Cold Kisses - Richard Thompson
The Hungry Wolf - X
The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey - Joni Mitchell
Fools In Love - Joe Jackson
Man-Size or Dress - PJ Harvey
Cross Bones Style - Cat Power
Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) - Beach Boys
Stones From The Sky - Neurosis (okay, maybe that one's a stretch...)

Maou 2009.09.11 08:57 AM

Queens of the Stone Age - I'm Designer
The Smashing Pumpkins - 1979
PJ Harvey - Rid of Me
Fleetwood Mac - Rhiannon

Of course, I'm not sure if nu-Ringo is up for the job.

I'll second PJ harvey's 'rid of me'

s3r3nity 2009.09.15 02:47 AM

Glamorous Sky.
Seems like every other J-rocker has covered it :P
Besides, wasn't Nana's image based on SR anyway?

CKSI 2009.09.16 04:26 AM

A Jamiroquai cover could be cool...but I'm in total agreeance for a PJ Harvey one!

Ai Yazawa (the mangaka) said it wasn't but it totally was, come on! Although Nana is a lot punkier than Ringo ever was, there's some serious similarities.

a_grumble_cake 2009.10.29 01:29 PM

Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights. I want to see how she does the vocals for that one...

MBF 2009.10.29 02:56 PM

SS-Ringo + Muse's Plug In Baby
... that'd be perfect!

Or maybe HF-Ringo + Björk's "it's oh so quiet"

Ringo~Bingo 2009.10.29 03:12 PM

^ nah, she should do "Sunburn" or "Uno" :hmph:
Shiina, Micky and HZM would tear Sunburn up! :o

Shoujo Robot 2009.10.29 05:17 PM

Any song by the Kinks, QOTSA, Pixies & the Breeders. :P

shiinafile 2009.11.22 09:02 AM

'Forward to Death' by the DK's
'Laisse Tomber les Filles' by France Gall (yes, another FG cover!)
"Fairies Wear Boots" by Black Sabbath
"Find It" by the Carrie Nations (Beyond the Valley of the Dolls)
"Young Man Blues"

chibijelly 2009.11.24 07:40 PM

Maybe a Butch Walker cover. That would be neat.

Then again Ringo Shiina/Butch Walker ANYTHING would make my life.

Entry№1 2009.11.24 09:09 PM

I'm with Shiinafile... More France Gall = Better. I'd like her to try a different one of France Gall's songs, though. Even though I do like "Laisse Tomber les Filles". Maybe "On se ressemble toi et moi"?
On se ressemble toi et moi

As for a more imaginative cover... Maybe Capsule's "Jumper", but in a jazz-rock way, with a megaphone instead of a vocoder... Maybe get S&P to help with it?

ringoxcore 2009.11.25 09:54 AM

how about jamiroquai's 'little l'?

total disagreement on Uno here =P

Sunburn... yeah, that would rock, but there's absolutely no way, Shiina could pull off Uno... don't get me wrong, it's a good song, and Shiina's a good musician, but this would be a total no-go combination ^^

And for France Gall covers, I want SR to do this:

France Gall - So einen jungen Mann

shiinafile 2009.11.28 08:25 AM

France Gall RULED!!

Is this a German cover of "Summer Samba (So Nice)"?
Summer Samba (So Nice)

On a side note, Nintendo totally ripped this song off in Animal Crossing: Wild World (visit the post office).

darkdisco 2009.11.29 12:45 AM

^ I was just about to post that SR ought to do some Astrud. Summer Samba, Berimbau, Tristeza - any of those would make me happy.

Yeah, it is, but I kinda prefer that cover version... maybe because of the cute lyrics :D

zyoeru 2010.01.01 09:16 PM

Realistically I'd like to hear her do something by Catatonia like:

Road Rage, Strange Glue, Karaoke Queen.

More enka would be AWESOME though, can you imagine a rocked up version of Jonkara Onna Bushi with a guitar orchestra instead of a shamisen orchestra. XD

Luciene 2010.01.19 05:00 AM

As I'm an U2 fan too it would be interesting if Ringo maked a U2 cover. It would be a little strange, I don't know, U2 seems so far from Ringo music style.
It would be a surprise and I'm sure a she would do a good work if she put her style into songs like "Beautiful day" or "Sunday Bloody Sunday" (oh, political shiina ringo!)

BanFan 2010.01.31 07:26 AM

I'd love a unique interpretation of this song:

Blur - Battle

jparanoid 2010.02.12 09:56 AM

I'd love to hear Ringo singing Fiona Apple songs such as Paper Bag, Love Ridden and Oh Well...
Of course probably this will remain in my dreams forever...

Yahiko 2010.02.13 04:15 AM

I agree with the Paper Bag thing, I would like her to cover The Cardigans' Fine

World Wide Waddle -Toddle

She'll do it for her senpai.

mae 2010.02.26 10:08 AM

Maybe sometime I'd like to listen her singing something from Carla Kihlstedt... not sure...

momeraths 2010.02.26 10:25 AM

I'd like to hear some bossa nova... the girl from impanema :D

KronKyrios 2010.10.05 05:15 PM

Tensai Preparate - Mo koukyuudo

Wonderful suggestion, momeraths. I am sure she would do a wonderful rendition of that... maybe a duet with Shirley Basey!

My suggestion for a good song to cover is:
Tensai Preparate - Mo koukyuudo (kari)

Yes she sang in the original, but i love that song and would love to hear it covered in any style she would choose. I can't imagine a better arrangement than the heavily-distorted, shill-screaming rendition she has already done, but that's why I love her. She can truly work magic with music.

One of the thing I admire most about this woman is her persistence in reinventing herself.

Further, I see no reason we should limit this topic to her covering other people's tunes (not that anybody specifically had, except by omission of recommending she cover her own songs)

---Oh, she would have to do Fukou jiman as a lead in... even if it just a false start.

matan-san 2012.11.02 10:30 PM

it would be interesting to hear her take on trashy Jpop songs like kyarypamyupamyu's ponponpon for example, or even something by Perfume (which aren't trashy at all)

Inseu 2012.11.04 02:00 PM

Nancy Sinatra - These Boots Are Made for Walkin'

David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes

Steely Dan - The Caves Of Altamira

Nick Cave - The Curse Of Millhaven :-)

The Doors - The Summer's Almost Gone (Tsukigime-hime style)

Squirrel Nut Zippers - Put A Lid On It

Brian Setzer Orchestra - You're The Boss

Would love to see her cover some Cardigan classics - Our Space, Erase/Rewind, Lovefool...

matan-san 2012.11.04 04:15 PM

also:
Tori Amos - Leather (big band style with lots of brass)
Meiko Kaji - Urami Bushi
Pink Lady - Toumei Ningen (as a mashup with Kameda's tune, cheesefest galore)

I don't see how PONPONPON is trashy, I think the lyrics are actually kind of subversively intelligent paired with the music video. Also, it was written by Yasutaka Nakata, who writes all of Perfume's music, so I find it ironic you chose those two.

I love PONPONPON myself (at least it's PV) but I called it trashy cause that's how most people view it. even if Perfume and Kyary are both produced by Yasutaka you can't deny that Perfume's stuff is (usually) more musicaly complex then Kyary (with the exception of Spending All My Time)

I glad I found someone to agree with me. I could give two left fucks about the song. I waited 4 months to get POINT in it's entirety and then Hurly Burly managed to be the best track regardless. One of the B-sides should have been the lead single.

If she was to do a perfume song, it have to be something short and easy to take the kitchen sink approach on or possibly a HF-esque take on something like "Edge".

An Utada song would be cool. I'd even think Hikki would return the favor.
