Thanks for the screencaps and interpretation, deadgrandma. I think Shinji is hitting the nail on the head... It's definitely in line with the concept of the original "iroha" poem -

According to Wikipedia, the poem has more musical ties than I'd previously believed. Apparently, in addition to the poem being used to counter theater seats, the first line (also the name of Ringo's song) is also the Japanese equivalent of the do re mi:
