The one thing hip-hop has going for it is good beats. A lot of the best kickin' ass/car chase/chillin' music is based around (slightly modified) hip-hop beats, despite having no actual rap in the song itself.
One of my favorite albums, by a Japanese artist named 'TUCKER', is a hip-hop influenced instrumental deal. It's got hip-hop style beats under lots of crazy improvisation on organs and synths that this guy modifies himself. Very cool stuff, and you can clearly hear the hip-hop influence on the album. So not all hip-hop is bad.
Although, in all honesty, most rap nowadays sucks. The best hip-hop is from the 80's and early 90's (at least, I think so...I have a friend who's some kind of hip-hop aficionado, so I'm basing most of what I say on what I've heard while spending time with him).
