Yeah, I get the same sense from other young people, that they appreciate the "classics" but not the new stuff. It's like, when she fits a specific genre (rebel-girl rock) she makes a cultural impact, but when she becomes her own genre or part of a band people don't know what to make of it except it's some kind of (high-quality) performance art.
I hear the same thing from other cultural observers in Japan, that whenever they ask "what's the good new stuff?" they always hear, "nothing new is good."
