If a drummer is only hearing headphones for certain songs, I would presume that they need to synchronize to a click track for that tune. To faithfully reproduce songs that have some elements that would be difficult or impossible to recreate on stage, bands these days use a computer to play back certain tracks. The drummer then has to "slave" to the master sync signal from the computer.
